hazel80 Posted April 21, 2016 #1 Share Posted April 21, 2016 Hi all, thinking of doing a fred cruise from Newcastle, looked up port and its North Shields, Tyne. Parking is very expensive, and cant find any alternatives. Has anyone any ideas of reducing the parking costs, i.e. alternative site, etc. Thankyou

Maybe they do parking, check their website. Also, there's a Premier Inn right at the terminal maybe they do a deal for parking there ?
hazel80 Posted April 21, 2016 Author #3 Share Posted April 21, 2016 Thanks for reply, but DFDS charge £12 per night, Premier Inn are not showing any parking deals. We live in B'ham and have a number of offsite parking where they ferry you to the airport, dont appear to have similar operations in Newcastle. Yeah, but as you say in B'ham thats an airport park and ride not a port ? Newcastle airport have that facility but not sure of you can park and ride to the cruise terminal at North Shileds, its around 13 miles or so. Also, there's a Premier Inn right at the terminal maybe they do a deal for parking there ? Can you walk easily from the Premier inn to the port terminal?. Hazel80 hav you thought about taking the train. We are taking the train from Aberdeen direct to Newcastle and staying in the Premier inn. So if you add up the cost of petrol, parking, and the hassle on the roads against the train fare it may make financial and relaxing benefits

UK Cruiser2 Posted April 21, 2016 #7 Share Posted April 21, 2016 Go to Google Maps and enter Premier Inn Postcode NE29 6DW. Take the little man and drop him near the hotel you can see the International Passenger Terminal is right near it.They both share the same roundabout. hazel80 Posted April 21, 2016 Author #8 Share Posted April 21, 2016 Thanks, may do that but would have preferred to drive up, saves messing around loading luggage on train, etc. it is cheaper though.

Northern Boy Posted April 21, 2016 #10 Share Posted April 21, 2016 If you book parking through Fred it's £9.50 per day.
tring Posted April 22, 2016 #11 Share Posted April 22, 2016 (edited) We are increasingly using the trains as we like to take it easy and have a hotel night near the port anyway if travelling a distance. Cost wise, benefits vary according to length of cruise and it would depend on how near you live to a main line station to commence your journey of course. You can book assistance at train stations if you need help with luggage and I have heard it works well. To get the best price tickets, you do need to buy them when the low price ones come out, (about 12 weeks before travel), but our senior rails cards bring the price down more again. We last sailed from Newcastle a few years ago and Fred ran a shuttle bus from the main train station in Newcastle on the day of the cruise. I cannot remember if there was a cost, but I am sure there will be now if they still offer a shuttle!! That gives the option of staying in the city centre at Newcastle and we had a very good choice of restaurants/bars etc. to spend the night before the cruise. Newcastle is a very nice city, with the more scenic and trendy riverside area as well as the city centre. We have been able to use loyalty points or good offers for hotels as there are lots of them within fairly easy reach of the main station. We used to think of driving as the easy option, but are now looking at the train as the easier option, but everyone has their own needs and priorities. Enjoy your holiday, whatever you decide.
