Balcony Smokers on Allure

Recommended Posts

Balcony smoking is BANNED on Royal Caribbean.

I know you know this, so don't try to defend the behavior.

If you smoke on your balcony and I see or smell it I'm calling GS and Security. They can fine you and put you off in a foreign port. That is the policy you agreed to.

I will not silently put up with cigarette smokers when I pay a premium for a balcony, period, not up for discussion or negotiation. Either smoke in designated areas (that I wills stay away from) and have ashtrays (for everyones safety) or sail Holland America while balcony smoking is still allowed for the time being.

Why is this so difficult to understand?

I think an employee of the cruise line would have to catch you smoking on your balcony. And if they did, they would give you a verbal warning first before taking it to issuing a fine or cleaning fee. I'm sure that a call from a neighboring balcony would not constitute evidence of a passenger smoking on their balcony.

Was this actually proven to be the fault of a cigarette?

"Britain's Marine Accident Investigations Branch, which has been charged with investigating the fire that broke out on Princess Cruises' Star Princess in March, now says that a discarded cigarette is most likely the culprit."

We were booked B2B on Star Princess TA/Baltic. Due to the fire I spent countless hours rebooking TA and making travel arrangements to meet Star in Copenhagen for Baltic half of cruise. Princess told us we HAD to be in Copenhagen for Baltic cruise and it was up to us to get there. We ended up going TA on NCL Jewel and arrived in Barcelona and had to fly to meet Star. We were the first sailing after the fire and were told it was a discarded cigarette.

We are xsmokers, the worst kind and because of our smoking I suffer from COPD and DH had to have most of R lung removed and suffer thru chemo therapy and radiation therapy. We do not got to casino on RCCL cruises and avoid the smoking side of pool deck. You had better not smoke on a balcony anywhere near us. I will totally go mad and immediately head to Guest Services. These are my opinions and with just reasons.

Oh, I am not debating that it happens...I am sure it does, and I am sure the other Princess ship WAS a cigarette. I was just stating that smoking on ships (even inside your cabin) has been allowed right up until a couple of years ago. Just seems more common place that the engine rooms/kitchens catch fire MUCH more frequently.

IMO...IMO....IMO....I think smoking has been practically eliminated because of passenger complaints, not fires. Honestly, smoke has never bothered me. I remember the days of people smoking in movie theaters, grocery stores, airplanes, etc. All that being said, I will probably die of "second hand smoke"

I agree.

And that was the point of my earlier post. Smoking on an upper deck is no more safe then smoking on your own balcony. They stopped it because people complained.

And as far as the picture of the ship that did catch fire, they list the reason that the fire damage was so significant was because the materials used to build that ship were not fire resistant allowing it to catch fire and spread quickly.

Again I am not a smoker but I find it amusing people act all up in arms about how unsafe it is to smoke on your balcony yet it has been told over and over how unsafe it is to use a surge protector onboard and no on blinks an eye.

A couple of years ago, over the course of 18 months, my father-in-law and my own dad died, both from lung cancer. Yes, they were both smokers, old school, who just couldn't give up, even when it became known how bad smoking is. I can't even put into words how awful it is to watch strong men succumb to this horrible disease.

First hand or second hand smoke is a public health issue. It's a simple as that.

I can avoid the casino and port side of the pool deck. That's the areas (plus some others) that people who choose to smoke can.

Please leave the areas I choose to be in smoke free.

I agree 100 percent. No..it was not an upgrade....just a lateral....but they could not catch the neighbors smoking, so they moved Gambee and his mom. I would have been livid. He is such a nice young man and was just happy to get away from the smoke.

Maybe the smoke was not coming from his neighbors balcony.I would also be upset if security continue to knock on my door about a smoker.I am a non smoker.Try to enjoy your cruise and stop worrying about what other people are doing.:)

It was his neighbors. You obviously did not read the review or see the pics. Do your homework before you make your dumb comments.

If you're uncomfortable with the cruise line keeping an eye on your balcony then you should probably not sail on a mass-market ship. They have security cameras aimed at the balconies at all times. Your "private" balcony is really only private in that you don't share the space with other passengers.

Well aware of what's currently out there - doesn't mean I want even more intrusiveness or the cost that comes with it.

Here's a person that's on one ship and counting the smokers on another ship.

Whenever we have a ship next to us I'm looking for naked women walking around their cabins. :o ;)

Everyone has their own priorities. :D

Two thumbs up on that one !!!

How about finding naked women who smoke on their balcony. That would be like heaven without the cloud cover.

Guest services has a list of smoking complaints from neighboring balconies and they will fine you for the first offense, second offense off the ship. Ships should not sell cigarettes and any bought on board should be confiscated by security at check in.

Confiscate peoples cigarettes when they are allowed to smoke in certain areas of the ship? That's ridiculous and makes absolutely zero sense.

I am not sure if guest services does anything any more, because I unfortunately had to report a neighbor on Majesty and I did so because he was smoking a cigar and not 5ft below are canvas covers which is a major fire Hazzard and those things are fueled. The cover had burn marks on it. Nothing got done and the guy smoked through the remainder of the cruise. I wasn't going to go down and have another conversation with them on it. Thankfully no fire, and it was blowing really good most nights. Ashes were whipping past my face.

We had another smoking/toking incident in the WJ with 2 officers too boot to witness it and nothing got said or done nor was the violator chased down.

I wasn't defending smokers. I was complaining about chair hogs and how stress can lead to health issues.

You sound a little tightly wound. I bet you are an ex-smoker.

I know what you are saying. We follow the rules ALL of the time...but I am NOT ...NOR do we EVER care about those that do not. Why would I waste my time and energy on people that don't? It will never end with rule breakers, so why should I get upset about it? We have much better things to do than count the smokers.

Because seat-saving and line cutting are whatever. But secondhand smoke is literally dangerous to those around. Line cutting don't give you cancer but secondhand smoke sure does.

Thats why people aren't calling in on seat-savers and line cutters, we just laugh.

Don't barrate OP for pointing out that maybe its becoming an issue worth addressing. You do you OP.

As someone going on the Allure soon (and spending thousands to do so) I can deal with having to get to the pool early to get seats, or waiting a bit longer at the buffet, or people who "cheat" and use their drink package for two people. But smoke smells bad, and its dangerous, and I don't want to sit there on my honeymoon with my wife while someone puffs on the cancer sticks next door. Simple as that.

And to people who think I'm coming down on smokers, I am. Most smokers would agree its horrible for you. Addiction is a bad deal, no matter what you're addicted to.

Do you support people knowingly breaking the smoking rule regarding balconies? It's a simple yes or no question

Not really that simple. I support having fun and enjoying myself. Sometimes this might step over rules and guidelines. Like the 'No Sharing' of drink pkgs. Many fuss about it on these boards, but then they share in other areas that are against the rules. And then there is the 'chair hogs'. I don't think I'd be in the wrong to say that a few chair hoggers also the same that pitches hissy fits about balcony smokers.

I try, and most often succeed, by just chilling and letting others do the same. Rules or No Rules.

That's exactly what the OP was -- he went crying down to the desk with a pic on his phone of someone smoking .. that's a tattletale (a nicer word than the other one I have in mind .... )

And how very grand of you to "welcome someone to go and sail a cruise line that meets their requirements" ... who are you that you speak on behalf of the entire cruise line?

We agree from non smokers. We have been on fifteen Royal cruises and only smelled smoke on one. That being said on a moving ship it did not bother us that much, Or did not last that long.

Lol...no, a little too early for drinking. ...but if you read my other posts, I stated that smoke does not bother me. I am not one to report what other people are doing...I am WAY too busy having fun to care. BUT....I understand the people that it DOES bother, especially if the ship is in a stationary position. Honestly, I am really just tired of the whole topic. Going to pour a drink now....JUST KIDDING..:D

This may be acceptable to someone who doesn't have a medical issue that makes a person super sensitive to smoke and haven't experience having chain smokers in the next balcony cabin. This happened to us before balcony smoking was banned on RCI ships so when they came out, mostly to smoke, we had to go inside so we lost the use of our balcony for a good part of that cruise. They like to watch the sail in to port and docking procedure while on their balcony and while smoking. Guess what we couldn't do likewise on our balcony because of their cigarette smoke.

The incident this past winter mentioned in my previous posts happened while the ship was in port and that person was smoking at the railing one balcony over and one deck under ours.

It's kind of you to be so tolerant of inconsiderate to others folks smoking on their balcony, even though this isn't allowed anymore on RCI ships, but some people can't be so tolerant without losing the benefit of having and the enjoyment of their balcony.

Sitting on my balcony on the Liberty of the Seas, we are docked next to the Allure in Cozumel, so far have witnessed five cabins where they are smoking on the balconies. It is as if they don't know any better, no one is hiding it!! Looks like an announcement needs to be made on this ship about the no smoking policy. What a fire hazard!!

Did you stop at the bars and check out all the underage drinkers?

How many cabs were speeding?

Jaywalkers? How many?

Oh my goodness. Why doesn't everyone just go on their cruise and enjoy and have a good time. Standing on the dock and counting how many smokers there are? Taking pictures and sending them to corporate? Please take pics of the chair hogs, line cutters, elevator rudeness, dining room attire ....on and on. I have better things to do on my vacation....MUCH better things. If you learn to mind your own business, you will have a much better time. Why does one care about what the other one is doing????? HAVE FUN.

NO.....I am not a smoker....but I am not going to stand on the dock and take inventory as to how many people are smoking.

This doesn't happen. I have read many posts of people complaining about smoking and nothing is done much less someone thrown off the ship. Great try to scare people into compliance.

It's quite easy to make a casual observation when in Cozumel of what is happening on the balconies of the ship beside yours especially if that ship is already docked and particularly for smoking which tends to stand out as it shouldn't be done. This was very obvious from what the OP said and most people who have balcony are on these when going into or sometime while in port.

I can only speculate the other activities you mentioned are common in LA, CA.

It never surprises me what nonsense some people will post here when they don't agree with what has been posted by someone.
