excess Alcohol

We are on the Jewel of Seas, 16th October 2017, out of Rome.

We will have done an extensive land trip prior and will most likely have a few bottles of wine over the limit. So do they just confiscate them for cruise, or will we have to try and find some where to store them? We are from Australia and wine has proved to be a special souvenir.

Thanks in advance for the help.

They'll take them from you when you board, and store for you. You can collect on your last full day.

Best to take aboard as hand-luggage, and ideal if you can put them together in a cardboard box.

Thanks for that the box is a great idea, we will want to take two with us, but would be happy to store any others we have.

Actually, OP is traveling on NCL. NCL has NO LIMIT on the amount of wine you can bring onboard. You WILL have to pay a corkage fee of $15 per bottle of any you wish to consume.

"Wine & Champagne Policy Guests may bring bottles of wine and champagne on board. When bottles are brought on board and served or consumed in any restaurant, public room area or in their stateroom, a corkage fee will be charged according to bottle sizes noted below. 750 ml Bottle: $15.00 1,500 ml Magnum: $30.00 Wine or champagne sent directly to the ship by travel agents, friends, family, etc. or from another retail source, are subject to the same fees. Box wines are not allowed on board."

If you don't intend to consume the wine, then ask NCL to hold it for you in the luggage room until the end of the cruise just like they hold liquor sold in their onboard liquor store until the end of the cruise.

Here's something important you need to know: Airports in Europe are extremely sensitive about overweight baggage. It is best to buy a small portable travel luggage scale so you know how much your luggage weighs. Packing bottles of wine in your luggage can easily make it overweight. Also, they are very strict about the size of your carryon and the number of carryons you have - it is 1 per person at most European airports including your purse. For this reason, it is usually best to have your souvenirs and things like wine and olive oil shipped to your home instead of trying to bring it back in your luggage.

Wrong Jewel, suitetraveller :p

NCL's Norwegian Jewel will be in Mexico, OP is on RCI's Jewel of the Seas in the Med.

So a limit of two bottles of wine per cabin for consumption on the ship -a recent change of policy now means you're not restricted to consuming them in your cabin, you can drink it anywhere on the ship, including dining rooms, with no corkage charge.

No limit on extra alcohol but it has to be stored by ship's security.

Yes, checked bags are weighed at European airports - though isn't that the same as elsewhere? - and excess weight is chargeable. Size limits too, though luggage manufacturers bear this in mind so that tends to only affect only exceptional luggage such as ski's.

Size limits too on hand luggage - have seen over-size go through without a problem but not something I'd risk cos if its problematic it goes as checked luggage for more $$$. Weight limits for hand luggage vary depending on the airline - I've experienced limits as low as 5kg on budget airlines, & no weight limit at all (as long as the passenger can lift it to the overhead bins) on British Airways. Ditto an extra piece of hand luggage - some airlines permit a purse or laptop, as well as a small suitcase.

Sorry to sound so disagreeable ;), but I also can't agree with shipping wine etc. Most things can be bought worldwide & the cost of shipping can easily exceed any savings over buying at home.
