star princess

We will let you know in a couple of weeks after we return from this next week's cruise!! The trick is getting out of Ft. Lauderdale ahead of the hurricane.LOL

We have people sailing with her who have been on her before and it's their favorite ship. There is a couple on her this week who will join us on our cruise next week.

I've been on the Golden Princess and this is like a sister ship. I really enjoyed the Golden so my expectations are high. From what I hear, this might be an older ship--I'll have to see if that matters. After being on the Caribbean Princess last year, I know she'll seem much smaller, and I'll miss Movies Under the Stars and the Caribe Cafe--but it will probably be a more intimate atmosphere.

Take care. Lynne

We were on the Star last November and we absolutely loved her. We were on the Aloha deck with a balcony. The state room was roomy enough for the 2 of us. We only ate in the main dining area once and that was not because the food wasnt good or the service was not good but it was just not our style of dining. We went crazy at the buffet! The service was great everywhere.. the steward, casino, dining area, room service, etc. I cannot think of one complaint other than having to get off. We are heading out on the Caribbean Princess next weekend. You will love the Star!

Chris, not sure what kind of info you would like? The Star was our "first" and well, there is nothing like that is there?

A beautiful well designed ship and one that I am sure you and the teenagers would find plenty to do on.

WE have sailed Princess and Celebrity, both are fine, a little different but you can't go wrong with Princess.

If you have an specific concerns or questions, put them out here, someone will be able to help you.

I think that the teens would love the Star. The pools have alot of action during the sea days and there is some sort of "kids club" not sure what age your teens are. We went to the Western on the Star and loved Cozumel. We rented a jeep for $75 that would be cool for your family to do. We also went to Montego Bay  didnt like it and were back on the ship by 11 am... take a ship tour on that one for sure! We also went to Grand Cayman .. we took a tour from a local after we got off the tender. It was post Ivan so there wasnt alot to see but still a nice day. I am heading to the Eastern so I can tell ya about that when I return. :D

Chris,

Have been on the Star twice, most recently in August for the Baltic Cruise.

Here is a link to my review:

http://www.cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/memberreview.cfm?EntryID=12514

I also have 2 albums in my webshots link below with photos.

I think the Star is a lovey ship. Do not have children so cannot comment on that for you. Except to say that I have friends who cruised with their teens & small children & loved it.

Mario Propato is the Maitre D. He has an awesome Dining Staff. I think one of the best in the fleet.

Commodore Ditel does an excellent job with his crew.

Hope you enjoy your cruise :)

Speaking of the Star Princess, does anyone know if they re-routed the Star Princess for the 10/16-10/23 western Caribbean trip? If so, where did they send her and do you think they'll do the same for the 10/23-10/30 cruise?

Thanks in advance.

You will love the Star! I was on her last Nov and sailing her again in a few weeks. She is a beautiful ship with a great staff. There is lots to do on board or if you like to just relax you have no problem finding places to do that.

You can't go wrong with Star Princess, and btw one poster said she is an older ship.....NOT. She is newer than the Golden Princess.

The Star on 10/9 was my first Princess cruise after 8 RCI. To be honest with everyone here, I was not impressed. Would I choose that line for my next cruise - I don't think so. We had a fun time but truthfully, the service was awful and I think the whole idea of the personal choice dining has done the dining room service in. I relayed my thoughts to the person at the pursers desk and he removed all grats from our charge. We tipped accordingly with envelopes. I had to remember this was a repositioning cruise from the Baltic but I have never seen so many unhappy wait staff faces in all my cruises. On our last night, we ate in the d-room without our friends as they could not do that scene again - and we had a Mexican waiter that served the main course never to come back to ask if things were ok or if we needed anything else. We walked out and he saw us and never said goodbye? I just think something was going on that no one was aware of. Did anyone else experience this? I sure hope not

In answer to Chatt- The Star has White resin deck loungers and chairs and tables. On Promenade deck there are Teak wooden loungers and benches.

We just got off her last Sunday before Wilma hit FLL.(10-23-05)

She is a beautiful ship in wonderful condition. The staff we encountered were very happy and helpful.

In answer to the OP Chris-

My teens (15 boy and 17 girl) loved the teen center and met some new friends they are emailing and have Int'l pen pals now.

At cruise start they would get a "Rap Sheet" with each days activities that were planned. When it came time for the activity, movie or game the Teen center hostess Fiona from Australia would ask if they wanted to do it or something else, she was very accomodating.

It can't be stressed enough how important it is to go to the OPEN HOUSE on the first night. Usually from 7 to 9 pm they have a ice breaker and meet and greet. Kids get a lot of info and they hook up here and then thru out the cruise would know each other. If you do not go and SIGN UP your kids that first day or next AM at the teen or kids center you are out of luck being ever able to go in and take pictures or poke around. People will not be allowed to go into the teen center after that. Not even parents, they will be asked to wait out side the door. I was yelled at (it was funny and very ok) to get out lest I embarrass my teens further!;) Its never too late to register though!

Some of the activites from OFFLIMITS TEEN center 13-17 year olds our week:

  • Free video game time in the video parlor ( usually lots of quarters!)
  • hot tub parties @11pm
  • ship scavenger hunt ( my DD won a cute star top)
  • Big screen jeopardy
  • hemp bracelets or beading
  • Teen Talent Time and Physical challenge
  • casino night

By the way that was all just on ONE DAY! plus too much to mention here.

Have fun future STAR cruisers!

LL
