You have to pay for your own mistakes. If you don't want to take the risk then book thru the cruise line. You know and accept the risks if you book on your own.

Not so!!! I live in Cozumel, have worked with the tourist industry and many friends work with the tour companies. Refunds are given when either your ship cancels port or tours are canceled due to weather factors. NO RISK!

Did it ever happen during a Bahamas cruise? I wonder what the alternative ports would be. I guess it would be a good idea to get to know the ports where we could possibly be going in case of bad weather? (In order to find something to do) It's always good to have a plan B.

Will be sailing in the Bahamas during the first week of October.

There is not a lot they can do with the short cruises to the Bahamas. It depends on the storm. They'll either cancel the cruise, delay departure/return, or if it's not going to be right on top of them, ride it out. We were on the NCL Sky doing a 3-night Bahamas cruise a few years ago out of Miami when Hurricane Sandy went through the Bahamas. We left Miami, got out into the deeper water off the coast and rode it out for a day. We weren't by the eye. but as you can imagine it was a rough day (30-40' seas and a lot of wind), and a lot of people were seasick (never saw the casino so empty in my life *grin*). But the next day it was pretty clear and we did Nassau without any problems.
