lmentzer Posted June 18, 2016 #1 Share Posted June 18, 2016 On the Costa Rica forum someone said all the cruise ships stopping in Puntarenas would now dock in Puntarenas rather than in Puerto Caldera (a crummy cargo port). Does anyone know where the Island Princess will dock in their Puntarenas stop on our December full transit of the Panama Canal cruise?
beg3yrs Posted June 18, 2016 #2 Share Posted June 18, 2016 Looks like you'll be docking right in town. Not that there's much of a town but it's certainly better than a cargo port. http://ports.cruisett.com/schedule/Costa_Rica/584-Puntarenas/December_2016/
MTJSR Posted June 18, 2016 #3 Share Posted June 18, 2016 Sure don't, however my Island cruise docked in Puntarenas and that worked out great. long dock with all the tour busses backed in for our quick tour departures. There is also and Choo Choo Tram that runs the length as well. Either way, nearly everything is a bus ride...unless you plan to play on the beach there. We took the river raft trip with lunch. Have a great time!
OCruisers Posted June 18, 2016 #4 Share Posted June 18, 2016 It's a long ride from Puntarenas to get to things worth seeing but you'll probably want to take an excursion because there's almost nothing to do in town. No way would we consider the beach at the port -- yucky looking water. The last time we had a port stop in Puntarenas, we stayed on the ship which is something we seldom do at port stops. :o
mailmama Posted June 18, 2016 #5 Share Posted June 18, 2016 We hired a private tour company take us to a volcano and to La Paz Waterfall park. One of the best excursions we have done in our 20 plus years of cruising. La Paz is beautiful and worth the drive inland. Don't stay at the port but venture inland to see Costa Rica. You will fall in love!!
bigchid Posted June 19, 2016 #6 Share Posted June 19, 2016 One of our favorite excursions was from there. We did the ships volcano tour. The guide can make it or break it, and we had a good one.
IsanTom Posted June 19, 2016 #7 Share Posted June 19, 2016 Find yourself a nice Tico Bar and drink some Imperial over ice! Yes, Tico's (Costa Ricans) drink their Imperial Beer over ice! I owned a house not too far from Puntarenas, so there is not too much to do in the immediate area, but the area is beautiful. Jaco Beach is not too far, but the beach is not very special. DentoAlaska Posted June 19, 2016 #8 Share Posted June 19, 2016 We signed up for the Rainforest Aerial Tram, Nature Walk & Lunch at this port. Does anyone have any insight they can share with me about this excursion?
Cobbins Posted June 19, 2016 #9 Share Posted June 19, 2016 We did the Rainforest tram etc when we were on the Island Princess a few years back. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Saw Toucans, Macaws and other birds and wildlife . Worth doing. Sent from my iPad using Forums mobile app
