Pompeii Tour guide

I am trying to decide whether to pre-book a tour guide now to meet us at Pompeii for a 2 hour tour; or

just wing it and hope there is a tour guide outside the gates of Pompeii who is looking for people for a tour. (I assume that the guide would wait until they had 10 people for a tour) We are going in october.

what has been your experience?

It's been several years since my husband and I visited Pompeii. We opted to join a group of six folks whose guide was waiting to amass a group total of ten. 15 minutes later, we were still only a group of 8. The other six (who had been waiting longer than us) insisted he start anyway. When the guide balked, those six folks headed for the audio-tour booth. Suddenly our guide had an epiphany, ran after them, rounded us up and started his tour. I have to say, he did give an excellent tour (once he finally got started).
