BobandRuth Posted August 8, 2016 #1 Share Posted August 8, 2016 Thanks in advance for any help! We will be cruising soon from Boston to Montreal. We thought it might be nice to drive back from Montreal to Boston, but we are now reading that renting a car for a one-way trip of this sort can be very expensive. We had been looking forward to the drive through New England. Any advice about ways to make this drive and/or trip without paying a huge fee? Thanks again! Mar56 Posted August 8, 2016 #2 Share Posted August 8, 2016 Check to see if there is a train or bus that would take you across the border and then rent a car once in the US.
Rare 3rdGenCunarder Posted August 8, 2016 #3 Share Posted August 8, 2016 Check to see if there is a train or bus that would take you across the border and then rent a car once in the US. Amtrak's Adirondak has daily service between Montreal and NYC with lots of stops along the way. This page will give you a link to a pdf of the schedule. I did a quick check and it's $21 to Plattsburgh. You might see if there are any car rentals there. https://www.amtrak.com/adirondack-train
RuthC Posted August 8, 2016 #4 Share Posted August 8, 2016 Plattsburg would give you a very pretty ride down to Boston. However, if you take the ferry across Lake Champlain (the shorter route than going back north to the bridge), you'll have the car fee to add into your pricing. But it would be a lovely (short) ride on the ferry, then drive through the islands out to the main highway, then hop on I-89 all the way through Vermont, into New Hampshire. Connect to I-93, and down to Boston. The ride in Vermont and New Hampshire is in very pretty mountain scenery. You will probably even see a few leaves starting to turn out in the islands.
