Eric2005 Posted August 26, 2016 #1 Share Posted August 26, 2016 Do I need to take an overcoat for the 19 November crossing Southampton-NYC? Or is a sweater enough for decks?
newcruise Posted August 26, 2016 #2 Share Posted August 26, 2016 Hi, Eric2005, By the end of November NYC can be quite windy and frigid, so I recommend a coat if you plan to go ashore. Diane
Eric2005 Posted August 27, 2016 Author #3 Share Posted August 27, 2016 Thanks. What about on the decks? Will an overcoat be necessary?
newcruise Posted August 27, 2016 #4 Share Posted August 27, 2016 Thanks. What about on the decks? Will an overcoat be necessary? Yes, if you will be outdoors for any length of time. If not, then a warm sweater and scarf should suffice. Diane
CruisinChris Posted August 27, 2016 #5 Share Posted August 27, 2016 Eric I've done a couple crossings in August and worn sweatshirts and jeans mid-atlantic. The air temp is likely to be 40 or less, then add the wind chill of the actual windspeed, plus the speed of the ship moving over the water (say 25 knots) and it will be COLD. I'm on this one, and I'm bringing a coat, hat, gloves, and lightweight lap blanket for outside time.
Rare LadyL1 Posted August 28, 2016 #6 Share Posted August 28, 2016 A water resistant coat will be even better, if you are an all weather deck walker!
rrunner Posted September 14, 2016 #7 Share Posted September 14, 2016 A water resistant coat will be even better, if you are an all weather deck walker! Agree - plus a scarf and hat. It is likely to be windy and quite cold outside.

The wind can cut right through a sweater or sweat shirt! I also pack my gloves and ear muffs! Be prepared to enjoy and stay toasty warm :>)! Calliope Posted September 14, 2016 #9 Share Posted September 14, 2016 Every poster so far is correct. By all means do bring a heavy coat to wear. Will you use it; no one can answer that now. I've been on November and January crossings where a long sleeve shirt kept me quite comfortable. I've even fallen asleep in the warm sun on my balcony, but other times I've seen snow and ice on the balcony.
