Advice wanted re smoke issues on the Mercury

I have booked a family cruise on the Mercury for Alaska, next July. (celebration of our 50th anniversary)

My 11 year old grandaughter has asthsma, and is very allergic to cigarette/cigar/pipe smoke. She has been using a hand held nebulizer to help with her breathing on occasion.

Needless to say, my son and daughter-in-law are concerned that there may be an issue with smoke, and want to leave her at home. I, myself, have never encountered any smoke on cruise ships except in the casino.

How is the ventaliion system on the Mercury?

I would like advice from anyone with a similar problem.

I was on the Mercury a few years ago. Smoking is not allowed in the dinning rooms. You won't notice it in the staterooms because they clean it so well. The Casino was bad that is for sure for smoke. They do allow smoking in the public areas like the bars and stuff, but usually you just quickly walk through them or avoid them by going outside around them. You also are not allowed to smoke in the main theatre. Outside usually you are only allowed to smoke on one side of the ship, but I found that a few people didn't pay attention. It's outside though and you can easily move somewhere else. I wouldn't worry about it too much, just be aware as you walk through places. We didn't notice it too much and my husband has asthma. You will find there will be more children during the summer months and so maybe people will be more aware of their smoking. Hope that helps

How do they handle the smoke situations in every day life? (diesel fumes are the worst!) They must have some set no-nos, and precautions already set up, so that they can control her environment pretty well. No restaurants, malls or parks where people might be smoking? I realize that on land if a bad situation presented itself you could go outdoors or leave the room or building etc. and hope the situation will be better in the next location. Well, you can do the same on a ship, as well. You are not restricted to remaining indoors except in some venues (such as the theater or the main dining room), and those venues are no smoking areas. The port side of the ship is the "okay to smoke" side in public areas on Celebrity. Be sure you keep her on the starboard side and avoid walking thru the casino. Just go up or down one floor if you are travelling the length of the ship. It can be done. Let us know what they decide.
