Anyone ever been questioned about smoking in cabin?

Last cruise, when we returned to the cabin one day, there was an ionizer machine going. The cabin steward came in shortly thereafter to get the machine, and asked us if we were smoking in the cabin. I told him no, absolutely not, that we are smokers but we would never smoke in the cabin. But we do stay in the smoking area when we are on Lido, and we are in the casino a lot, smoking. I guess he was very sensitive to the smell of smoke, and either our clothes were that smelly, or someone near us was smoking. But it was not us for sure.

We were not charged anything, and I would have raised all kinds of hell if we were, but the rest of the cruise I was worried that they would try to charge us for smoking in the cabin.

Has this happened to anyone else? I guess on our next cruise, I am going to have to bring a giant bottle of Febreeze, and spray ourselves before we go back to the cabin.

I really don't want to hear a discussion of how smoking is bad for you and that it should be totally banned on the ships. For now, it is not and we will continue to smoke. Just curious if this has happened to anyone else.

The smell was probably coming off your clothes and yes they more than likely were that smelly (no offense meant)

No offense taken. I know the smell clings to everything. But we've never had this happen before and I will definitely take steps to avoid this happening again.

Not us (while we most likely smell of smoke :D ) ....

But, we were asked by security if we had seen anyone smoking on the balcony next to us.

Unfortunately, they woke us up to ask at 6AM.

Good Grief, we'd been asleep. How would we know!

Apparently, there had been complaints about smoking on that balcony.

I was on a cruise and a guy and his wife didn't know they couldn't smoke on the balcony. The rrom steward turned them in and they got a letter saying they'd be fined $250 if it happened again. Daily the steward told on them and they were threatened with removal from the ship at the next port. He hadn't smoked in the cabin again but his clothes had the smell. He was harassed over and over on that trip.

Back when Carnival changed their smoking policy, which included no smoking allowed on the balconies, I switched from smoking cigarettes to vaping. Unlike tobacco products, such as cigarettes, vaping does leave any residual odor. It took me a few days to get used to not smoking any more, but I've been tobacco free for a little over two years. I'll probably get flamed (no pun intended) for saying this, and I'm not suggesting you do so, but you could vape on your balcony, and unless someone actually sees you, no one would ever know.

Believe me people have noticed before, they just haven't told you in an attempt to be polite and not offend you.

was that necessary Kevin?

I just don't like rude people. We that smoke know it clings to our clothing. I don't like the smell of certain perfumes, but I would not be rude enough to tell the perfume wearer that.

As to the original posters question- we smoke too, but have never been asked if we smoked in our cabin. Like you, we use the designated smoking areas. It's funny, we tried Holland America who still allow smoking on balconies, & still used the designated smoking areas of the ship more than our balcony.

WOW, something to think about. Smoker as well, and spent time in the smoking areas on our last cruise, but did not have that problem.

We did spot a steward spying on someone who was smoking. We were leaving Progreso, on deck 10 fwd above the bridge. A person on deck nine was not only smoking on his balcony, but not trying to hide it. he was leaning on the railing, puffin away. A room steward was watching him from the Grand Suite, (suite above the bridge on Conquest ships). The guy then just flicked that cig away. We could not believe it. When we could smoke on balconies, we would always have an ashtray, then we would wet it down and depose of it properly. A good wind could have blow that butt back onto someone else's balcony. SMH, it's smokers like that who give the rest a bad rep.

If they are under the impression that this has not been a problem, they are mistaken. This is just the first instance of someone pointing out the odor.

My wife works in an elementary school. She can tell you which kids parents smoke because the kids smell like cigarette smoke throughout the day. The smell lingers on the students the entire day.

That poster was saying (correctly) that he now vapes which does not cling to one's clothing nor (depending on the flavor of his juice) stink up a cabin.

Huh?

I don't care if people smoke or vape. Smokers who think others can't tell are misguided.

Actually, sir, you are misguided. And I'm calling SHENANIGANS! Smokers and Vapers are very different. You cannot tell when someone vapes, nice try. Move along and take your negative stereo-typed ideas elsewhere and try to push your holier-than-thou morals on other people.

And, just to clarify, my other half is a smoker and always asking if she can smoke on our balcony. And I always say, "Let's just walk up to the deck so you can smoke, we can chat it up and grab a beverage." .... works everytime. But, she will ask everyday. And, while I typed these responses, i was smoking a cigar and a cigarette, hitting my vape.... all while looking at flights to Denver.... Happy Sunday!

Sounds like a close call. Glad you weren't charged.

I think its just difficult for smokers to understand how the smell of cigarette smoke permeates clothing and hair. I can just pass someone 10 feet away from me inside a store and immediately know they are a smoker. Smokers can't smell it like that and I think that makes it difficult for smokers to understand what the big deal is.

I've also smelled cigarette smoke in the closets in my cabin on the ship from where the previous passengers where smokers. I'll have to remember about the ionizers if I run into that again. I didn't know Carnival had ionizers available.

And wasn't there a post here on this board yesterday about a passenger smoking in his or her cabin on Sunshine started a fire? Great point, Naomi John, about how dangerous smoking can be on a ship when the smoker is careless.

It use to be that the Room Stewards wouldn't tell/spy/do anything if they knew the passengers were smoking in their cabins or on their balconies because they were afraid that they would remove their tips...

From what I understand now, the Room Stewards will and do report smokers because they have been told if they know and don't report it, their job is on the line...

So, choice between a one time tip or their job... which would you choose ?

I thought I was clear but guess not. People who smoke and people who vape are two separate animals. I agree you can tell if someone smokes just based on the scent on their clothing or their body. You can not smell anything on a vaper.

It's unfortunate that people who smoke in their cabins put the cabin stewards in this position.

I am really confused.

I have only responded to the OP who was a smoker. I have not responded to anyone who vapes and have not said that vapers emit the same smell as smokers?

I have also not proclaimed that people should not smoke or not vape. I don't care what people do in public or private.

All I have done is point out that smokers may not realize just how strong the lingering smell of cigarette smoke lingers on them and those around them.

Perhaps you should reread the thread with an open mind?

What is not clear to me is where you think I said that vapers smell like smokers?

Don't be so sure. While you don't smell the typical acrid odor of cigarette smoke, there are some (notice I said SOME) vape flavors which leave a chemical-ly aroma behind. One of the vanillas and a few of the fruits are particularly noticeable and not particularly pleasant. I would rather smell them than the cigarette smoke, but I wish I didn't have to smell them, either. Or perfume/cologne, but that is another topic.

Agreed. The cigar flavored one tends to stick around a lot.
