iancal Posted September 25, 2016 #6 Share Posted September 25, 2016 We use the Amazon/Mariott visa. Foreign transactions with no 2.5 percent adder. We also use it for ATM withdrawals. We load up the card with a credit balance and then do foreign ATM withdrawals as Visa advances. There is no interest charge because we maintain a credit balance. Just came home from Ireland. We did a $550 ATM withdrawal. Our credit card charge for the advance was 1 percent, $5.50. IF we had used our bank card it would have been a service change of $5. PLUS a premium of 2.5-3 percent on the FX rate for a total service charge of just under $19. for one ATM withdrawal. We typically travel for extended periods so saving money by avoiding bank fees can add up quickly.
abaci Posted September 25, 2016 #7 Share Posted September 25, 2016 Yes but USAA charges 13-15% interest. If you don't carry a balance then this doesn't matter and therefor shouldn't matter to this discussion.
