Port of Tampa Posted September 1, 2016 #1 Share Posted September 1, 2016 Packing now and forgot if you can pack a corkscrew in your carry-on. It does have a small seal knife. Any advice would help I know the wife would like to open the wine ASAP. Cheers and thanks. 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷

maluhia87 Posted September 1, 2016 #4 Share Posted September 1, 2016 If you are flying you would need to check it since it has a blade on it also. http://apps.tsa.dhs.gov/mytsa/cib_home.aspx?search_term=
drerickson77 Posted September 1, 2016 #5 Share Posted September 1, 2016 Allow me to suggest an alternative...Wine bottles with screw on caps. It's worked for us. And easily re-sealable.

True, but their favorite wine may not come in a screw-top.

maluhia87 Posted September 1, 2016 #8 Share Posted September 1, 2016 I moved my corkscrew to my carry-on before boarding our ship a few weeks ago and didn't have any problems, but it doesn't have a blade on it.
sandij Posted September 1, 2016 #9 Share Posted September 1, 2016 I use a reusable bag from the wine dept at the grocery store (.99) and just drop the corkscrew in with the bottles of wine and a couple plastic wine glasses. Never had a problem clearing security
MaineBirdBrain Posted September 1, 2016 #10 Share Posted September 1, 2016 There are tsa approved foil cutting corkscrews that can go in your carry-on. There are foil cutters that do not involve a knife blade. Here is an example. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001ARYJNG/ref=pd_aw_sim_79_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=92SW9WZY9CQWQKHK97DD
Organized Chaos Posted September 2, 2016 #11 Share Posted September 2, 2016 OP already specified they were driving, not flying, so TSA won't be an issue. We put our corkscrew (it has a seal knife) in a little travel pouch we have that holds nail clippers, tweezers, etc. Then put that in our carry-on. No problems. Don't forget it cause they charge a $15 corkage fee to open it in the MDR, steakhouse, or bar.
MaineBirdBrain Posted September 2, 2016 #12 Share Posted September 2, 2016 I saw that. However, the thread drifted beyond that with a post that sited tsa regs and a post about screw tops. Since those flew right by without your point of order statement, I thought mine was pertinent enough. Regardless of drift or mode of transportation, the item I linked to is superior and allows flexibility. No worries about future limitations. Port of Tampa Posted September 2, 2016 Author #14 Share Posted September 2, 2016 Great info thanks everyone. Decided I'll put one in carry-on and one in checked bag as back-up in case we run into issues at the security screening. Cheers and happy cruising. cruising maniac Posted September 2, 2016 #15 Share Posted September 2, 2016 Celebrity took mine because of the little, teeny, tiny knife so I broke it off of my new corkscrew. I had never had a problem or question before in more than 20 cruises.
satbeachbill Posted September 2, 2016 #16 Share Posted September 2, 2016 Why bother with a corkscrew. Just use this method:
SHATOMFL Posted September 2, 2016 #17 Share Posted September 2, 2016 on our last cruise we just asked our cabin steward for one & he gave us a carnival one to keep.

Organized Chaos Posted September 2, 2016 #20 Share Posted September 2, 2016 Since those flew right by without your point of order statement,I just happened to follow your post, I wasn't directing it at you, specifically. Since multiple people brought it up, I was just pointing out that the OP wouldn't need to worry about TSA regulations. jamesr3939 Posted September 2, 2016 #21 Share Posted September 2, 2016 Never had an issue with wine opener with a small blade at ship check in or with TSA. Recently I bought a large flat metal bottle opener at a Key West port stop, as I am always forgetting to pack on. Ever since, I have been pulled aside for my carry on. After four times of extra checking I finally asked. It seems between the corkscrew, bottle opener and nail clippers all being grouped together it raises red flags. So now I have separated them to different parts of my ditty bag and we will see how that works in two weeks.
Domino D Posted September 2, 2016 #22 Share Posted September 2, 2016 Why bother with a corkscrew. Just use this method: I actually have experience at this. It works very well. Use a shoe. I saw a friend try to do it with a towel one time, not successful. FYI, Carnival will let you carry a pocket knife on board provided the blade is less than 4 inches in length. So the foil knife is definitely not a problem.
Domino D Posted September 2, 2016 #23 Share Posted September 2, 2016 It seems between the corkscrew, bottle opener and nail clippers all being grouped together it raises red flags. Weird. I wonder if they think your going to combine them into some kind of mega weapon. Macgyyver likely caused this.
Organized Chaos Posted September 3, 2016 #24 Share Posted September 3, 2016 It seems between the corkscrew, bottle opener and nail clippers all being grouped together it raises red flags. So now I have separated them to different parts of my ditty bag and we will see how that works in two weeks. We have a small, flat grooming tool travel case. Two sets of nail clippers (small fingernail & large toenail), tweezers, a nail file, cuticle nippers (I had to look that one up), and a cuticle pusher (basically a sharp pointy piece of metal. I slipped our corkscrew (with foil knife) into this case so we'd know where it was. Put it in a carry-on and didn't have a problem in Port Everglades. I guess they didn't think I looked like someone who'd make a shank out of all that stuff.

Understood. Either way, I still believe it is wise to purchase one without a blade. There is no purpose for a blade when opening a wine bottle if you have the bladeless foil cutting corkscrew. It is best to buy this item and have it available if and when you do fly. No need to have 2 corkscrews when this one serves every purpose. I was being proactive.
