Maybebell Posted October 30, 2005 #1 Share Posted October 30, 2005 we are 28 days away from our cruise, and I was told on Saturday that I have 1 more week to work. Now what to do about the cruise??? I knew my job was in jeporady but I was hoping it would work out but no luck. Hubby says we should still go, but that money sure would be nice to have to pay bills. Sure puts a damper on the cruise. smrtypnts Posted October 30, 2005 #2 Share Posted October 30, 2005 I could be wrong, but I don't know of any insurance that covers such a thing, so unless you have insurance that DOES cover such a loss, you may as well cruise, just cancel any excursions and plan for free beaches and staying on the ship. Don't drink too much and worry about the new job when you return.
goneclear Posted October 30, 2005 #3 Share Posted October 30, 2005 In one years time you will be looking back saying what a great vacation that was and how glad you are that you went. The world is a mess and life is to short so when something good like a criuse vacation comes around dont give it up for anything. Things have a way of working out. Leafpeeper Posted October 30, 2005 #4 Share Posted October 30, 2005 Go and enjoy your vacation. You will be entitled to unemployment insurance for several months. That gives you plenty of time to find another job. I think of a vacation as a necessary health measure to prevent illness. Too many Americans are overstressed, which leads to disease. The cruise will give you time to think and consider your options. One year--a few days after my husband got laid off, we took a trip to Atlantic City and won lots of money. He didn't want to go, but I insisted because we needed time to relax and think about the future. We didn't bring much money with us, but we left with our pockets full. Hope you enjoy your cruise. beachchick Posted October 31, 2005 #5 Share Posted October 31, 2005 Actually, there are some travel insurance policies that cover loss of a job by a traveller or companion within 30 days of travel. If you have insurance, check it out. Whether to go is a toughie. Part of me says that you should go and enjoy it because a new job (which I'm sure you'll find soon) may not have vacation available for a while. The other part is the money worry issues. I don't know, but if you will spend the time worrying about the money (as I would), then it may be better to check and see if your insurance covers job loss. OTOH, if you can't get the money back, then go and enjoy it rather than just lose the money. You can be careful with your travel spending and come back ready to "hit the bricks" (so to speak) and re-energized. beachchick
4merlurker Posted October 31, 2005 #6 Share Posted October 31, 2005 Wow I feel for you! It's so hard to decide what to do when $$$ is an issue. We haven't lost a job or anything serious like that BUT in the past 2 weeks DH totaled his car in an accident (No collision insurance:eek: ) and my transmission went...for the 3rd and final time! Refuse to put a new one in again! We need 2 new cars and after planning over a year and a half for a cruise next week it's soooooo disappointing to have to cut the budget :( BUT, you gotta do what ya gotta do. Good Luck and Happy Sailing!!!! :) ~Connie
Lady & Sir Posted October 31, 2005 #7 Share Posted October 31, 2005 Life goes on. You go on the cruise. Even if you get a new job between now and then, most employers will be understanding if you had prior plans that you can't change without losing money. I had folks working for me in tha past where this happened, and knew others in this situation, and they never had to change plans. Beth p.s. You will be fine. Things happen for a reason, and usually, for the better. You'll see.
Maybebell Posted October 31, 2005 Author #8 Share Posted October 31, 2005 I want to thank everyone for writing. This board has been a great help to me now and in the past. We do have trip insurance but it does not cover loosing a job so we would be out 25%. We have decided to go and like so many of you said, we will watch our spending money. No $25.00 tee shirts and crazy stuff like that. One of the best things about the cruises is that most of the food and the shows are included. So we need to stay out of the casino LOL. Thanks again everyone. Your help is appreciated. Sherrie Mariner of the Seas 11/27/05 Navigator of the seas 5/3/
megessey Posted October 31, 2005 #9 Share Posted October 31, 2005 Sherrie -- I'm so glad you decided to go! Because 10 years from now, you won't look back with fond memories of that week where you were working ;)
Lady & Sir Posted October 31, 2005 #10 Share Posted October 31, 2005 Sherrie, That's great!! Sending you a big hug and wishing you the best in your job hunt too. If you don't already have a job before you go, may your phone be ringing off the hook with offers when you return! Beth
Ali-in-Texas Posted October 31, 2005 #11 Share Posted October 31, 2005 We do have trip insurance that covers job loss. I'm not sure if we would use it if my husband lost his job but wanted it covered just in case. I spent a few hours reading the fine print on trip insurance before we bought it. The insurance offered by our TA was much more expensive and covered much less than what we got on insuremytrip.com.
JBoshears Posted October 31, 2005 #12 Share Posted October 31, 2005 Sherrie, Sorry about your job loss. I totally understand. I was just getting ready to post the same question you had. My husband suddenly lost his job last week. We are 26 days away from a wonderful week in paradise. What to do??? We talked about it at length this weekend, and decided to go. We could either cancel now and loose money (no ins.), or go on a fabulous vacation with memories for a lifetime. We will have to be extra careful. We do not drink, so that will help a little. We plan on taking our own Pepsi and bottled water, and will not take any excursions we already have planned. The ship is good enough. I am just thrilled to go. Its been rough, but it will get better, and you and I both will be glad we forged ahead! I hope you have a wonderful trip. Jennifer
texancruzer Posted October 31, 2005 #13 Share Posted October 31, 2005 I know this may be off topic.... but have you thought about working a temp job between lay off date and cruise date.... Depending on your skills MOST TEMP PLACES WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU WALK IN THE DOOR. It would mean a little extra money AND who knows - maybe one would develop into an offer for a full time job when you get back.... I found the best job I ever had thru a temp position. You can usually work whatever you want (1 day or all of em) Even if this doesnt sound like something you want to do - go and enjoy your cruise anyway. nfused2cruze Posted October 31, 2005 #14 Share Posted October 31, 2005 It's needed. Another chapter in your life. A few weeks from now and your whole view will change. Okay everyone, let's try to help them have a budget cruise - 1. DON'T BUY A SODA CARD - drink tea, lemonade, etc. 2. NO GAMBLING!!!! 3. TAKE YOUR OWN PICTURES - MAYBE IF IT MAKES YOU REALLY LOOK FAB - BUY ONE. 4. NO EXCURSIONS. 5. NO SPECIALTY RESTAURANTS .....keep it going......
