Generally I purchase a standard insurance package, but this time I have a traveling companion that requires specific coverage. In a nutshell, she has ailing in-laws. Is it possible to get insurance that would cover both trip cacellation and return home travel expenses, in the event of a medical emergency/death of family members (most specifically her in-laws)? In addition to being exceedingly helpful in terms of our getting the right type of coverage for our particular needs/preferences, they were also very helpful with one of our two (large) claims. The first claim was straightforward, but not the second one. We had a medical emergency in the middle of a land trip in Europe, and it required a major change to our itinerary - and some hefty extra expenses that weren't medical. We were assuming that this wouldn't be covered, because we were able to resume the trip after about a week. Steve contacted our travel insurer (kudos to Travel Insured - again!) and then told us how to characterize the claim. All of our extra expenses were covered. We are always careful to get coverage that waives the exclusion for pre-existing conditions. That means there is no bickering over whether the travel medical emergency is/is not related to any pre-existing condition. It also means there is no need to provide lots of medical history or records of care, which can take time and effort, and also delay having a claim paid while the insurer sorts out whether there is a relevant pre-existing condition. You can pick the best policy for your needs and your traveling companion can do the same.
