1fifthavenue Posted September 16, 2016 #2 Share Posted September 16, 2016 If you're interested in WW2, the Lascaris war rooms is an absolute must. It's a great exhibition / museum and tells the story of the importance of Malta in the war. Very easy to get to on your own
Capricruiser Posted September 16, 2016 #3 Share Posted September 16, 2016 A taxi from the port up to the town gate will cost you 15 euros. Much cheaper but a bit more walking would be the elevator which is along the road to the right as you get off the ship, beyond the bars and restaurants. 1fifthavenue Posted September 16, 2016 #4 Share Posted September 16, 2016 The Grand Master's palace is also a nice trip, it's a bit of a museum to the Knights of Malta and a beautiful old building
KSWind Posted September 16, 2016 #5 Share Posted September 16, 2016 Valletta is one of my favorite cities in the world and very walkable. Use the Barracka lift. They have stairs there, but they may be a challenge.

rojojacko Posted September 18, 2016 #8 Share Posted September 18, 2016 I'm sure that you will find at least two different now on hop off buses on the waterfront near where you dock and there are two different routes. It will give you the chance to see more of the island and hear some of the history. Get off in Mdina for an hour or so as it is a lovely ancient walled city. Beauseant Posted September 20, 2016 #9 Share Posted September 20, 2016 Hello, was by chance having a quick look-see here, and thought that my post from 2009 might still be of help to you. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1046600 Hope was a bit of help to you, and hope you'll like my little Malta ;-) Was here cause am thinking of booking on the new MSC Meraviglia for next year. Beauseant Posted September 20, 2016 #10 Share Posted September 20, 2016 (edited) Please note that some things have changed (for the better) from 2009, like the new lift (elevator) that takes you up from outside the cruise terminal in the Valletta Water Front, up to Upper Barrakka Gardens. Only around 8 minutes walking distance, and if not mistaken costs only 2 euro. And please remember that some links in the above post might have expired (like Taxi info, for example) but others still count. Plus other new things like a new sea ferry service to the Old 3 Cities, plus to the more modern town of Sliema on the other side of Valletta. Malta is very small, but full of Historical sites to enjoy. Like for example the revamped Fort Saint Elmo in the tip of Valletta (built by the famous Knights of Saint John, 500 years ago). Valletta is very do able by walk, and has so much to offer. Here's links to some live web cam views of the port (plus other places): http://www.skylinewebcams.com/en/webcam/malta/malta/valletta/grand-harbour.html (views of 3 Cities, with Fort ST.Angelo on the left, and city of Senglea on the right) http://www.skylinewebcams.com/en/webcam/malta/malta/floriana/grand-harbour-valletta-waterfront.html ( Views from Valletta waterfront cruise terminal. Valletta on the left and Fort St.Angelo on the right.) http://www.skylinewebcams.com/en/webcam/malta/malta/valletta/fort-ricasoli.html (port entrance from Valletta. Fort Ricasoli on the right) http://www.skylinewebcams.com/en/webcam/malta/malta/valletta/valletta-harbour-ricasoli-bighi.html (Port entrance) Enjoy! SlowBlueSkies Posted December 15, 2016 #13 Share Posted December 15, 2016 I will be on Spendida in December stopping in MaltaWhat do you recommend to do. Two moms and their 30 year old daughters Thank you Sandi07054, My husband and I just spent the last year living in Valletta. It's a beautiful city, with lots to see, especially if you like museums and history. Simply strolling the streets, or soaking up the sunshine in one of the lesser-visited gardens is also enjoyable. I have a travel blog, and I just wrote an in-depth piece on what to see/do in Valletta: https://triciaannemitchell.com/2016/12/04/things-to-do-in-valletta-malta-attractions-hotels-guide/ Here's hoping you have a wonderful time in Valletta. The capital city sure has a lot to offer despite being a tiny one! We feel very lucky to have spent an entire year there.
