SherRay6840 Posted September 23, 2016 #1 Share Posted September 23, 2016 I'm taking my 17 yr old daughter on the Breakaway with me in Nov. I was planning on getting the Internet pkg for her onboard but not for me. Love being tuned out for a week but still want the convenience of being able to communicate with her on the ship. I know it's like $7.95 to activate the app but will she need to use app (pay $7.95 on top of Internet pkg) for us to be able to communicate on the ship? Btw we both have iPhones if that makes any difference. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
Rare KeithJenner Posted September 23, 2016 #2 Share Posted September 23, 2016 Yes, if she wants to communicate with you via iconcierge then she will still need to pay the fee. Having the Internet is a completely different thing
cssc123 Posted September 23, 2016 #3 Share Posted September 23, 2016 also its the 7.95 per device. So if its for her to check in with you (or whomever) you will have to pay to activate both devices. It does not allow ship to shore communications, just passenger to passenger. If it is for her to check in with friends at home (via text or some other app) then she will need an internet package, but will not need the iconcierge app. Hope that clarifies. Rare mking8288 Posted September 23, 2016 #4 Share Posted September 23, 2016 To text and call other iConcierge guests onboard the ship, each device used has to be registered/activated for a one-time, per cruise fee of ... most recently price as reported, still at $9.99 (not $7.95 as that was last year's) x 2 devices. You do NOT need to purchase any inTERnet WiFi minutes, as this is over ship's inTRAnet network only. The fees do not include access for web browsing or checking email, for that - on the BA, you will need to purchase one of the MB data plan, or the pricey unlimited data plan for the duration of the cruise (skipping the details/fine prints & exclusions, etc. etc.) If your "Free At Sea" package included the 250 minute plan, it is equivalent of 1 GB or 1,000 MB worth of WiFi data, which roughly equal to about 1,000 minutes of usage, one device at a time & can be shared - has nothing to do with the iConcierge App itself, most of the features are free to use, like reviewing onboard charges & specialty dining reservations, etc. You can read the details in our most recent review below under the SIGNature link for May 2016 "Semi Live ... " for the Breakaway. Good luck with staying connecting - the tips are in the thread.
SherRay6840 Posted September 25, 2016 Author #5 Share Posted September 25, 2016 Thanks to all. Looks like it's best for us each to activate and use the app. Mking8288 great tips in your reviews!!! My goal is to start cruising smarter and more frequently as opposed to like its the last one with all kinds of bells and whistles and unnecessary add ons so I learned a lot from your notes and jotted down quite a few. This is also my first CAS cruise and am midship ov deck 5 on BA. Wasn't sure about that at first but based on your review and pics it looks nice and quiet, steady and convenient so not going to bother with upgrade. Plan on perusing some more of your posts as well. My friend said she's reading 'The Girl On The Train'. I told her I'm reading 'The Guy On The Ship'. Lol. Thanks again.
hawkeyetlse Posted September 25, 2016 #6 Share Posted September 25, 2016 It does not allow ship to shore communications, just passenger to passenger. It does allow ship to shore calls, but they incur extra per-minute fees. The OP should probably discuss this with their daughter before activating the app on their device, in case they are tempted to make such calls. Then again, off-ship calls are voice-only (no texting), and a 17 year old probably doesn't know what a voice call is.
Freckles_51 Posted September 25, 2016 #7 Share Posted September 25, 2016 Last week on Getaway it was $14.99 per device for messaging through iConcierge. We decided not to pay for that but still had the app for the free features, however most of the time we could not connect to the ships wifi so it was useless. That being said, it worked really well on POA, so maybe it depends on the ship. SherRay6840 Posted September 25, 2016 Author #8 Share Posted September 25, 2016 Hawkeyetlse. Yes. She never uses a phone for actual talking (unless I call her) lol. Fingers do the talking. She's getting the Internet pkg. paying herself from her part time job so she can continue 'talking' to all her friends instantly. Instagram, instant msg, snap chat. I just want to shut it all off for a week but be able to connect with her easily. Hoping she can wait a day to sign up and save $30 as I saw posted on cc. Freckles I haven't seen latest pricing but some said 9.95. Worked great for us on the Pearl last year to Alaska but have seen mixed reviews.
