newyorker123 Posted September 28, 2016 #1 Share Posted September 28, 2016 We are going to Altun Ha through a ship excursion. It says sturdy shoes are recommended. Just wondering who has done it with a good pair of sandals or Tevas (which won't fall off). I didn't really want to bring sneakers with everything else I'm bringing. Rare crewsweeper Posted September 28, 2016 #2 Share Posted September 28, 2016 Tevas over sandals/flops. Although some type of covered toe shoe is best. Tevas at least have some support and sturdy soles. Especially if you are climbing around. Altun Ha is excavated and there are walking paths and flat grass areas. But it's not smooth terrain. Amoré Familia Posted September 29, 2016 #4 Share Posted September 29, 2016 We went to Lamani and I can tell you I am glad we had tennis shoes on. One there was some rough paths and two the red fire ants. Definitely a good shoe. We felt bad for those that did not have good shoes on. Plus we ran into rain. Apparently it can rain anytime in the jungle. Bring one of those cheap ponchos . We got wet but dried quickly because of the heat. Rare crewsweeper Posted September 29, 2016 #5 Share Posted September 29, 2016 Well, yes at Lamanai, you'd be foolish to wear any open toed type shoe. It's in a different part of the country and not fully excavated. Altun Ha is nearer Belize City and excavated grounds are much more park like, albeit, not completely smooth and climbing on any ruins temple is best handled with sturdy shoes. If you plan to do any climbing (which you can do at Altun Ha), I would wear toed shoe. I didn't and my tevas were fine. We didn't really have any rough terrain to cross at Altun either. pokerpro5 Posted October 3, 2016 #7 Share Posted October 3, 2016 Definitely wear sneakers at Altun Ha. Climbing the temples actually isn't hard. I expected something much more treacherous. However, the paths on the ground can be uneven and slippery. Even wearing sneakers, I slipped and fell pretty hard while walking on the ground, though thankfully I landed in a good position and didn't hurt anything. peymas Posted October 5, 2016 #9 Share Posted October 5, 2016 How is the boat ride part of this excursion? Sent from my iPad using Forums We enjoyed the river ride. Always on the lookout for monkeys, alligators, etc. it was very hot that day and there wasn't a roof over the boat. Every once in a while the driver would speed up and cool us off a little.
