Applying gift cards to sign and sail account

Daughter received a couple of carnival gift cards and wants to know if you have to apply them to your sign and sail card at the concierge desk before using your sign and sail card.

Is she putting a credit card on file or a cash deposit as well? Our last cruise, I put a card on file but then once on board I used the self service kiosk to add my gift cards. All my on board charges were deducted from my gift card balance first and I never had any pending/final charges to my credit card.

You will have to add them to your S&S account. You can do so at check in (some ports will, some will not), at the Guest Services desk, or at the kiosk.

Your S&S account has to be funded somehow before you can use it. If you fund it using a CC or cash, you can then add the gift cards later. Regardless, they will have to be added to your account to use them.

She does have her account set using a CC. Wanted to go to the concierge desk when it wasn't busy.

Then she is set. If she can't add them at check-in (some ports can, some can't) she can do it at her leisure at the self-serve kiosk (although sometimes I have not been able to get it to accept them) or at Guest Services when she finds it isn't busy.

They will give you a receipt for each card when they put them on your account. Pay attention to the receipt and make sure it has the correct amount on it. The last time I went to guest services to apply several gift cards, 8 in all, they handed me 8 receipts. Luckily I flipped through them as I was walking away. They all had the amount of the card except one, it looked exactly like the others but said $0.00. I took it back to her immediately and she redid it and the $500 showed up. I had left the cards with her, so if I hadn't noticed it right away I don't know how they would have handled it, but with no proof, I'd bet I'd be out $500.

My experience with putting money on account at check-in was not good. I set up at online check-in with a credit card. As my traveling companions all put money on their account at check-in at the port, I did so too. Apparently no problem. With that cash, plus cruise cash I had purchased and onboard check-in thought I was set. However, when that money was used up my card was deactivated. I had to go to guest services, only to find out that I had a balance that had to be taken care of before I could use my card. I was told they had no record of a credit card. My account was changed to a cash account when I added money at check-in. Never again, I will always do that at guest services now. I think maybe there is so much going on during check-in at the port there are too many distractions.

Kind of on the same topic. Say I add a $500 gift card to my S&S but throughout the whole cruise I only spend $50. How is the remaining $450 returned to me?

I just did that on my last cruise. A few days after I got home UPS delivered a gift card made out for the balance I did not spend.

We use gift cards every cruise and apply them at check in to avoid a trip to guest services. We've never had an issue applying them at check in. Also, every time we've tried to apply them at the kiosk they've shown a zero balance and we've had to go to guest services anyway.

We had the same thing happen at the kiosk, but they were super sweet at the Information Desk and everything went smoothly.

tallyho8 -- The gift card was a Carnival gift card just like you bought? No cash value except to spend on Carnival?

Yes, the gift card they refunded me was exactly like the ones I buy on eBay, Verizon or AARP and I always use these cards. I generally go to the kiosk on the 2nd day and add them to my sail and sign account and then if there is money left over they refund it by gift card.

If I owe a balance they take it out of the credit card I have on file.

If I was not planning on cruising with Carnival again for a long time and had a balance, I would go to the casino the last night, put the money from my s&s card into the slot machine, pull once and then cash the rest in.

I have a quick, related question. If I were to go to the kiosks with my gift cards would I be able to swipe them or do I have to key in the numbers on the back? It's not a big deal at all but we plan on having a handful of gift cards for our next cruise in December so that would be a lot of numbers to type! No complaints either way though :)

We had 8. The kiosk would not let us download them on the Conquest 2 weeks ago. Had to go to GS to have downloaded to our account.
