Power boards

We are sailing this christmas on explorer of the seas. We have a US plug converter for the room but also wanted to know can i take a power board as well?

can I clarify what you mean by power board? Is that an extension cord? Where is your cruise going to?

Power board has 4 extra power plugs not an extension cord some might call it a power strip depending where you are from. We are leaving from sydney to pacific islands

ok ... I have heard that sometimes the cruise lines don't like power strips that have cords on them since they can be a safety hazard (tripping) for their staff ... I have one of these, and take it everywhere with me ... no cord

the nice thing is that the plug that goes in the wall rotates 360 degrees to fit into wall plugs in the best angle for your needs

What the cruise lines are really looking to prevent coming onboard are not the cords on the power boards (strips), but surge protectors in the power boards. Unfortunately, this very popular Belkin multi-outlet device has a surge protector integral to it. Surge protectors are not needed onboard ships, as the types of power surges (high voltage) that these devices protect against are not present on ships. They also, by their design for residential use, are a fire hazard, that I describe frequently on CC as "the silent killer" like heart disease, which can strike with no warning. Even prior use of a particular surge protector on a ship with no problem is no indication that at any point, while working 100% properly, it can fail without warning.

 

Here is a USCG Safety Notice regarding surge protectors, and this is what started the big push by the lines to limit/inspect/prohibit power boards:

Just sailed on RC Liberty of the Seas from Galveston 2 weeks ago and we carried a power strip (without surge protection) without issues.

This one has USB ports (high and low volt) and a few regular sockets. This should be all you need and we find it does a nice job at home too so we can charge phones and other USB devices with just a regular USB cable.

Not sure what type of plugs you have in Australia, but if it's the same as US, then forget the power strip. Just bring a couple of EUR to US converters. Most staterooms have plenty of EUR outlets, just not many to accommodate US plugs.

Oz plugs are different from both US and European plugs.
