Oh no!!! A 'what to wear in MDR' thread!

Recommended Posts

This is the most debated topic on cruise critic. One has to make a choice of what to wear on "formal" nights in the MDR. Consider you tablemates if you are dining with strangers at a large table. If you feel comfortable wearing casual clothes; other than wearing your baseball cap all night for dinner; I have yelled at my 25 year old son for doing that; than go ahead. Be considerate of your tablemates who chose to dress up on a night that may feel very special to them. On my last cruise we celebrated one of my tablemates birthday on formal night. It really made this person feel special considering all of us were dressed for the occasion.

We dress up for formal night. I was asking about regular nights. :)

I personally don't wear shorts in the MDR. Dress codes are SUGGESTIONS. It is your cruise, dress as you feel. WARNING - If SO wears shorts, prying eyes will be trying to look up his shorts..... to talk about later... also, make sure he shaves his legs as they really don't like hairy legs....

Nothing in the FAQ section that says the dress code is SUGGESTED.

Q: What is the dress code in each of the restaurants?

A: The dress code in all of the restaurants is smart casual, except at the Grande, where every night is formal night.

Smart Casual: Ladies: Skirt or pants (no holes, rips or tears) with a blouse. Gentlemen: Pants (no holes, rips or tears) with a collared shirt.

Formal: Ladies: Cocktail dress or pantsuit. Gentlemen: Suit (black tie is optional).

Note: Swimsuits, robes, bare feet, tank tops, baseball caps and pool wear are not allowed in the main restaurants or specialty restaurants. T-shirts, shorts and flip-flops are acceptable for lunch.

Note: Smart Casual is allowed on Boarding Day at The Grande Restaurant.

I have seen short on formal night and regular nights. My question is who will stop you? Most of the time there is nobody at the entrance and once you seat in your table nobody will see your shorts anyways.

I'm not sure 100% now but they allow shorts on day 1 with the excuse that you got your luggages late ( I remember reading something about it on the compass)

On nights other than formal nights, we usually wear dress slacks and long-sleeved dress shirts , like Robert Graham or Jhane Barnes or similar. Have never felt out of place. We have always preferred being over-dressed rather than under-dressed.

It's up to you to you two, what you feel comfortable wearing in that setting.

Happy Cruising and Enjoy,

It says suggested under what to pack

Yes it does, RCCL posted their SUGGESTIONS. Dress Code is just a suggestion. We are not a proponent of shorts in the MDR but feel free to dress as you wish. We will not judge you like so many do.
