We have flown into Fort Lauderdale many times and rented cars, this time we are taking a hotel shuttle. Years ago there were specific phones in baggage claim that connected directly to a specific hotel. Are these still available or because most people have cell phones, have they been discontinued?

Yes, they are still there, but I would look up the hotel phone number before you leave on your trip and use your cell phone instead. That way after you have exited the baggage claim area turned right and walked about 300 yards to the hotel shuttle pick up area you can still call the hotel if you're still standing there waiting after 30 or 40 minutes. Otherwise, you will have to walk back to the baggage claim to call them back to ask them where the shuttle is while the shuttle is there and can't find you.
