We met a CC'er right up front (and didn't meet a few that said they'd be there - lol - looking at you, DG. ;) ) and enjoyed spending some time with her and her friend during the cruise.

It was just a 3-day to Nassau we booked a while back so we'd have something to look forward to. It was kind of a combined birthday/christmas present to each other cruise.

I didn't put any info on our booking about it being any kind of celebration as her birthday was in October and mine isn't for a few more days but our wonderful cabin steward gave me a 50$ gift card for the spa for my birthday anyway - I guess they have access to our info and he figured close enough. I got a beard trim and a little bit of a hair cut lol.

DAY 1

We left out of Port Canaveral and parked off-site at Lots of Honor. The price was half the cruise terminal parking and they are run by and for Veterans so I was happy to spend my parking money there.

We got there about a quarter to 1 and got loaded up in the van and waited for a couple other cruisers and were off to the port where we rolled in about 1:15

Embarkation was smooth - line was pretty long but moved smartly. We made it through security scanning and check-in and onto the boat in about an hour. They took our picture and gave us or S&S cards at check-in and we went straight to our cabin (8400) to rest a bit and I was getting my first beer a little after 2:30. Shortly after that Kiwanistaz walked up and asked if we were here (at the aft pool) for the Cruise Critic meet-up and I said yep! We had arranged on our roll-call to meet there and I said i' be the pony-tailed guy in a death metal t-shirt and that was apparently enough information to notice me lol. K. and her cruising friend shared their chocolate cake with us and we chatted about cruising and stuff until muster drill.

We ate at the steakhouse on the first night and got the free bottle of Merlot. It was fine (not trying to claim I'm a wine connoisseur - it was the same color as my steak and that was enough for me lol). The food was terrific as always - I got Filet, she got surf and turf and the bite I had of her lobster was tender and sweet and our steaks were cooked perfectly. I got the chocolate sampler thing for dessert this time as the I had the cheesecake in July and wanted to try something different. It was delicious - 4 preparations and all yummy and not so big that I couldn't finish it. (well, to be fair, there aren't many things that are so big I can't finish them. I'm getting pretty good at eating.) A really nice taste of different ways to enjoy chocolate.

Went back to room to watch my beloved Cowboys whip up on those dastardly Vikings. OK, "whip up on" may be overstating it but it was our 11th win in a row and we clinched a play-off spot. :)

DAY 2

Next day we got up earlier than I am used to (my job is a later shift than most people so I am usually in bed until 9ish) and had a lovely breakfast in the MDR. Coffee, cheese omelette, corned-beef hash (I really like how they prepare it so that it's crispy on the bottom and fluffy in the middle). Since I don't generally eat breakfast at home this was all way better than I usually get.

I think everyone at the table enjoyed most everything except my wife's pancakes were a little weird. I thought they might be microwaved as they were tough but they also had a tangy flavor we weren't expecting. I wondered if they might use yogurt or sour cream in the mix. Either way, she didn't eat them.

After breakfast we wandered around the lovely ship for a bit. I like the American history decorations - eagles and liberty bells and presidents everywhere. Ship layout was virtually identical to the Conquest we were on in July so we didn't get lost... much.

We went up to our balcony room to watch the ship pull into Nassau about noon. Saw plenty of people having fun para-sailing out in the ocean and lounging about on beaches as we sailed by. Got a 180 degree view as we pulled in front-ways and then spun around to back into port. Pulled up right next to the Vista and I was stupidly excited to see her. She's on the list. ;)

We went and had a Guy's Burger for lunch and sat where we could stare at the Vista for a little bit and then we leisurely made our way off the ship to go into Nassau - we just didn't care about waiting in the big rush to get off and we didn't have an excursion planned so we were in no hurry. My only complaint is my burger wasn't nearly as greasy as Riclop promised me it would be. It was very tasty nonetheless. :D Fries were also good and we even went buck for more of those a couple times during the cruise.

Got off about 2:30 and looked around the straw-market. Went into the government building at port and got our passports stamped. Because we wanted to! It's our first stamp in our first passports so it was kind of a big deal to us lol.

Didn't see much of interest at the straw market so we decided to take a horse and buggy ride around the city and enjoyed it. 15 bucks a head and he gave us a perfunctory (but friendly) little lesson pointing out landmarks and historical events. The important thing is it was easier than walking the many blocks to the post office to get stamps to mail our christmas cards as he showed us a drug store that sold stamps right near where we were and a what the mail-boxes looked like. Total trip time was under half an hour with one stop at the bank to get some cash from the ATM (note to self, stock up on cash before you got into ports next time. ATM fees on ship and in port are pretty high). (I should have known that but last time we came on board with cash and used that for our S&S and walkin' around ports money.)

So we mailed our cards from Nassau explaining to the recipients that they should enjoy these precious notes from us as that's about all they were getting - we spent all our christmas money on the cruise. :)

Back to the ship to get ready for early dining in the MDR. It was elegant night and I brought my kilt but that's when we realized she left the outfit she had planned to wear at home. Oops! Luckily she managed to put together "elegant enough" for Carnival.

She was not terribly impressed with the elegant night MDR menu but and I Couldn't decide among a few things so we got 3 appetizers and 3 entrees to share between us. We both agreed that the strawberry bisque was maybe our favorite thing ever. It's a good thing I do not have access to that all year long. The cream of asparagus soup was also very good and so were the stuffed mushrooms. But man, that strawberry....

Main course was Zucchini and eggplant Parmesan, Pork chop and Blue crab ravioli. My fave of the three was the eggplant parm. Delicious all the way from top to bottom. The ravioli were good BUT my second or third bite had some shell in it and that always ruins a dish for me. I liked the pork chop but she prefers them thin and fried crispy - more of a pork chip than a pork chop. I like them that way too but the MDR chop was thick and flavorful and fine for me. She's just always had them the other way and that's what she's used to.

Oh, and to continue the theme of threes, for dessert we had the chocolate hazelnut cake, creme brulee and a fruit plate. I imagine the fruit was good but I'll never know because I dove into the good stuff. It's amazing how good a bite of chocolate hazelnut cake is followed by a bite of crunchy, creamy creme brulee. Repeat until there's nothing left. Dang. THere's nothing left.

After dinner we stopped by guest services and picked up our complimentary decks of playing cards. They were the same design as the packs from Conquest so nothing new but if we keep cruising we'll soon have enough matching decks for a game of Canasta or Hands and Feet. WHile there we ran into Cruise Director Lee and we took apic with him. He's brand new but doing a swell job. He's been on Valor a week. Don't know if he'll stay with the ship or stay with the port when Valor swaps out with Liberty but a super nice Englishman and pretty funny too. Whoever gets him should have fun!

Went up and changed out of our fancy clothes and went to a show but I forget what it was - will have to check the Fun Times when I get home.

DAY 3 - SEA DAY

started with the Dr Suess breakfast which was cute and worth the 5 bucks even though the eggs were very green and, again, up way earlier than I'm used to. Coffee, apple juice and orange juice were all good. She had the green eggs and ate half of them. I had the steak and eggs and ate all of it - not HUGE but several savory bites of filet and 2 eggs perfectly over medium with Bearnaise sauce. The fried potatoes went well with it and we both were happy to see cheese grits on the menu so we got those too. WAY better than the runny regular grits at breakfast the day before. (I forgot to mention that above).

Then we went up to the spa to collect on my birthday present. Beard trim and a few split ends cut off the back of my hair. They tried a little to talk me into other stuff but a polite "no thank-you" was all it took to get on with the show. Zip - the show is over. It doesn't take long to groom a fella what doesn't wanna be groomed. Wife was happy I got anything done and I was happy it didn't go over the 50 dollar credit. And, truth be told, having someone wash your hair and kind of massage your scalp is very relaxing.

Next we wanted to play some trivia so we went up to the Dream bar in the Casino and failed miserably at answering questions about TV shows we thought we watched a lot. Never did win a ship on a stick or even a medal. Played Pictionary and I think we won but the game guy lost count of score and there were no prizes anyway so we didn't press the issue. Hung out with Cruise Critic friends for a bit and then we all went to watch the Love and Marriage show and it was pretty funny. Never get tired of couples married 60 years trying to be funny. We tried to get picked but the folks who did get picked all did a good job.

After that they went to get ready for their early Chef's Table dinner. I'll let Kiwanistaz go into more detail if she wants but she said it was fantastic.

We went and relaxed a bit before our MDR dinner at 6. Again, food was good - some of it great - but I forgot to take pictures of it lol. I did get a snap of the egg roll appetizer. I had the Mojito chicken and she had some vegetabley thing and we shared a lamb shank. Chicken was awesome - I loved the mojo sauce it was in. The lamb was very tasy and tender and meaty. We both loved the blueberry pie a-la-mode for dessert.

Debarkation :(

They made us leave. But not before another nice breakfast in MDR followed by about an hour and half of lounging about the promenade waiting for them to call luggage zone 16. We weren't in any hurry and once they called us we never stopped moving until we got outside to catch our shuttle back to Lots of Honor. They were calling me just as we finished up with customs and we got right in the van and back to the lot and 30 minutes later we were home. Well, a few blocks from home. We stopped for some lunch at Chuy's.

Service with a Smile!

Just like with our 7-day on Conquest, every single employee we saw smiled and greeted us warmly. Our room steward was on top of everything all 3 days. He cleaned twice a day and we were never asked which we wanted. Dining room staff were fast, friendly and efficient - if a little hard to understand. We made it through though and didn't have to eat pigs feet or anything for lack of communication. Bartenders never took more than a few seconds to get to me so I always had beer when I wanted it. We did not do Cheers as it just isn't worth it to us with her not drinking much and me mostly drinking beer. I did see a few nice scotches I might try in the future but I wasn't in the mood this trip.

The ship could use some paint and wall-paper here and there but overll it was clean and smelled nice.

Now, our cabin. I picked it so I only have myself to blame - I wanted up high and in the back because we had up high and in the front last time. BUT, despite many warnings here on CC, I forgot to check the deck maps above and below. 8400 is a deck 8 balcony towards the rear above cabins but below the Lido buffet. It's a good thing this was only 3 nights as we could hear the thundering herds all night long tromping across our ceiling. Wife said it never bothered her and it didn't REALLY bother me that much as once I go to sleep I'm out. But I could hear them and there were times it was loud while I was awake. LIGHT sleepers may want to avoid this area.

Our balcony was lovely and the weather was terrific. I even got a little bit chilly one late night out there watching waves go by. At one point we passed a ship in the night and it was pretty cool seeing it all lit up heading one way as we headed the other. I wish I had gotten a picture but by the time I realized it was going to be close enough to be more than a blob of light in the dark it was already steaming past us.

So thank you, Carnival, for another lovely time and we'll see you in April of 2018 for the Panama Canal Partial Transit. Hoping to sneak another shortie sortie in before then. I'll post up some pictures as soon as I get a chance to find the good ones. I do have Fun Times but only a couple menus. It'll probably all change soon anyway as the ships swap PC to Galveston like next week or so.

I don't think we ever were even in the piano bar but I'll see if the info is in the fun times tonight.

On a side note, at one point I was on the elevator with a group that looked like old rockers to me - one guy with long, white hair said "Hey, I like your shirt - where was that?" and I told him it was from last year's Florida Metal Fest in Tampa and I turned so he could read the band list on the back and I heard him telling his girlfriend yeah I know these guys and those guys...

As we were getting off the elevator he leans in and says "yeah that's real cool, thanks for letting me see the bands - there's a bearded guy with us somewhere - he's the drummer for Manowar..."

I don't know if he was yanking my chain but I'd bet there's a good 80% chance he was telling the truth...I saw them later and it sure could have been but I didn't want to bug them...

Hopping on the Valor tomorrow!! Any chance you could post some of the fun times?

I haven't dug them out yet, I tried to find them last night but no idea where DW put everything and she doesn't remember which bag they were in lol. I promise I will find them though - house isn't THAT big. Oh - maybe too late..sorry - but I'll post them anyway.

I agree about the Strawberry Bisque soup. It's my favorite! Love the kilt, BTW. I think you should join us on Vista in March!

Thanks! and yeah, I wish - Vista is on my Lista - but probably not this March. Eventually though!

I like to transfer the cold fruit soups into a water goblet and drink it like a smoothee. I know I've read that others do this so it's not my invention. ;)
