Diamond: Are Blue Jeans Ok on non-formal nights?

Here's a 40-something's $0.02

I hadn’t really thought about it, but reading this thread caused me to ask myself, “would it bother me if someone wore jeans to the dining room on non-formal nights?” Still not sure, but probably not. I understand from this thread that Princess may not actually enforce a dress code, but this is from their website (my comments in parentheses)–

Dressing Up
....Shorts, cut-off T-shirts, "torn" jeans and bare feet are not permitted in the dining room. (I guess untorn jeans are OK with Princess!) For smart casual evenings, passengers dress as they would for a fine restaurant at home, (I guess someone may actually consider Wendy’s a fine restaurant!) with ladies in skirts/dresses/ pantsuits and gentlemen wearing shirts with collars and/or a sports jacket....

I’m a firm believer of to each his/her own, as long as you don’t infringe on another persons’ rights. Do we have a right to dine only with hundreds of strangers who are not wearing jeans? Only if we own the restaurant, or the owner plainly states a dress code, and that’s not the case here.

That being said, cruises are a special event to me. Guess I’ll leave my Sergio Valentis at home!

This waDressing Up
When you're in port, evening dress is casual, slacks, sweaters, blouses, open-neck shirts, etc. are typically worn. Shorts, cut-off T-shirts, "torn" jeans and bare feet are not permitted in the dining room. For smart casual evenings, passengers dress as they would for a fine restaurant at home, with ladies in skirts/dresses/ pantsuits and gentlemen wearing shirts with collars and/or a sports jacket. On formal nights, typical black tie formal wear is appropriate. Items include evening gowns and cocktail dresses for ladies and tuxedos, dinner jackets or dark suits for men. Tuxedo rentals can be arranged prior to the cruise on certain itineraries. See the chart below for general dress code schedule. s copied from the Princess website.......

I think this is so funny. The silly things we worry over. I was on a Costa cruise and the last night we all had to wear bed sheets for the toga party. When my girlfriends and I walked into the dining room, folks actually applauded. Applause for wearing sheets! My point is whether you're wearing a sheet, couture evening dress, or jeans as long as you're stylish and neat who really cares?

Why do folks who want to break the dress code keep writing in for approval and then get upset when folks disagree? And why do folks who are traditionalists (I happen to love formal night and the smart casual code myself) feel annoyed or offended by somebody else's attire? I other people's clothes are for Princess' Fashion Police to worry about, not me. Bigger issues to worry about my friends...like the coffee

Happy sailing everyone.

Please please do not wear jeans! One cruise we were on a family came to formal night in shorts! They were not turned away but they acted as if 'WE PAID FOR A CRUISE, AND WE WILL DRESS THE WAY WE WANT' Well we paid for our cruise too and I don't want to see this kind of dressing. If they want to dress like that then go on a drifferent vacation!

Any post asking about jeans in the dining room is guaranteed to draw at least 60 responses. Allow me to add to the total:

C'mon man, you're on a nice vacation! Splurge and bring some dockers.

LOL! Well, I'll add my opinion, too. Not about jeans, though. Please, guys, leave the oversized tank tops for your private balcony! Just don't like enjoy the pit hair with breakfast, lunch OR dinner!

SueDMiller, unfortunately you did miss something. The comments were made indirectly THREE times immed. after my postings, as I wrote. You incorrectly read my comment because I never claimed I was called out "by name" until the last personal jab. That post was poking at me, making clear rude remarks to my comments, anyone could see that.

Quote: "Maybe you will learn fom us the correct dress code...."
"Am surprised you mention Rod...."

Still no apology for the snide remarks which is fine. I only know more nasties are on their way so I won't be responding to this thread anymore.

To beat the crap out of a dead horse with a giant stick, clearly there is an age discrepancy when it comes to dress.

I participate in formal evenings because I love clothes and I love getting dressed up, but from the vantage point of an aging Gen Xer, going to out at night wearing jeans just isn't a big deal. Many people do, not all, but of a certain age, it's not an issue anymore. And jeans are in no way disrespectful towards older people -- if they feel it is, they're not older, they're old

Personally I like to adhere (for the most part) to the guidelines of dress on a Princess cruise. Formal on formal evenings, bathing suit on bathing suit days and everything in between.

But a nice pair of slim fitted, bootcut jeans no matter the color is fine as long as you can dress it up vs dressing it down.

Believe me, I've seen worse. I don't judge what I see and I may notice but don't really care, but I've seen worse (that means YOU lady in the purple sweatsuit and Bensonhurst Aqua Net hair! )

Whatever you do, just don't wear the old-lady jeans with the high waist and tapered ankles from the 80s. Now THAT is a near death painful eyesight killer.

For all the discussions about appropriate dining room dress on these forums, I have rarely seen people dressed inappropriately at dinner on Princess. However, to address the issues brought up in this thread...

Just like anything else in life, people who are planning a vacation should look closely at their options and see how their personal preferences, and willingness to comply with what is expected, fit into each particular vacation. I would think that just looking at the Princess brochures, the expected dress code is fairly obvious. Just as the Club Med and Windjammer brochures indicate a more relaxed atmosphere, and therefore, clothing expectations.

Hence, I just do not understand how someone (particularly a person who takes enough time to research their vacation as to come to this site and respond to this thread), can not know what is expected. The entire decor of Princess ships are elegant. I have found that the vast majority of people who cruise Princess do so because they enjoy a classy environment where they can be pampered AND they enjoy stepping out of their everyday lives (and often, clothes) to have a vacation that is not the “same old stuff”.

I do not buy the excuse that “where we live, people wear ratty old sweats to expensive restaurants”. Just because those around you have no social awareness, not to mention common courtesy, does not mean that it is okay to perpetuate those behaviors. It’s the old “if your friends all jumped off a bridge...” thing.

Bottom line - what is the problem? It all seems to be spelled out quite well. If you don’t want to be expected to dress up occasionally, don’t eat in the dining rooms, or chose a different vacation. We don’t always cruise. When we want a very special vacation, we book a premium resort, and expect to follow dress guidelines there. When we are looking for casual, we do Club Med, Disney, or the like. When we cruise, we plan on formal nights, and “smart casual” dinners. It's just part of the vacation.

I've also heard from the manager of our local grocery store, who just returned from a Carnival cruise, that dress codes are extremely lax there, so that is also an option for those who must wear their jeans.

BTW, I’m in my 30's, and live in jeans and comfy clothes in my non-cruise life.

From Carnival's website:

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>Depending on the length of the cruise, either formal dress or casual resort wear is required in the Dining Room. The dress requirement for children is the same. For those not wanting to dress up, the Lido restaurants are open nightly (with the exception of the last evening of the cruise), and have a casual dress code. Formal Wear: tuxedo (optional); suit and tie; sport coat, tie and slacks; evening gown; cocktail dress; pantsuit Casual Resort Wear: sport shirts and slacks; dresses; skirts; pantsuit NOTE: Shorts, t-shirts and bathing attire are not permitted in the Dining Room during dinner.
<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

As you can see, Carnival's dress codes are very similar to Princess'. I have sailed both lines and the percentage of people wearing jeans on non-formal night is about the same.

On the cruises I have been on on both lines, it is not at all uncommon to see jeans in the dining room.

As long as Princess doesn't ban jeans, I will continue to wear them (not on formal night).

I will never understand why some people get so upset over the fabric of somebody elses pants!

Just off the Dawn and did see a couple of people in jeans in the dining room on non formal night. Everyone in the dining room on formal night, but one, appeared dressed.
In the buffet, it was anything goes. Jeans, dressy, shorts and no one seemed to care one way or the other. Around the rest of the ship outside of the d.r. and shows, people were in smart casual or casual and out on the pool deck, promenade deck, whatever was worn. It was fairly laid back on every night except formal night.

I'm having withdrawal. Need help!
