That's what I have done 5x now and will be doing s 6th time in a few weeks!

it's very easy to get around...lots to see and do within a 15-20 min walk from the ship......

From tourist traps to chain restaurants to huts on a beach to fine jewelry shopping it has it all really.

Nassau. She wants to wing it instead of booking an excursion - is that possible? Haha. She's never been, me either, but I know Nassau isn't the nicest of towns from what I've read from other critics.

How old is your mother? That may be a determining factor.

She'll be fine. If she was 82, I would have had other advice. Nassau is not my favorite place (I grew up in Miami, and have been there many times) but the two of you will be OK as long as you stay in the main tourist areas.

i didnt explore more than between port and the straw market but if you go beyond that area, i'd imagine it has to be nicer. but close to port its rundown and depressing and very congested. and i felt like i was in vegas with them handing out the porn except this was with coupons to try to get you inside.

One time we went to the British Colonial Hilton (lovely hotel) and had

brunch tea, went to the Pirate Museum, and shopped on Bay St. on our own.

There is plenty to do in Nassau.

If you like the beach- the Melia on Cable Beach is a good place to take a taxi to for a day pass- we usually go for 3 or 4 hours and then go to a place in town in the afternoon.

If you like gardens- The Ardastra Gardens and Zoo is a good place- but we would take a taxi there.

Nassau is what you make of it...

Most of the people who complain about Nassau never leave the couple of blocks of congested shopping right outside the Welcome Center.

I'm 51 and in decent, not great shape. (I have always been on my feet all day at work, so walking distances is no problem)

First couple of times we did our own walking tours out to Fort Fincastle and the Queen's Staircase, over to the Governor's House and the Graycliff and down to the British Colonial Hilton, then back to the ship. (great time and met really nice people well away from pier area. But you have to use the same common sense and awareness of your surroundings as you would in New York, LA, San Fran, Chicago, etc.)

Been to Ardastra gardens and Zoo. (flamingos wandering the park between their shows)

Been to Blue Lagoon for a day. (highly recommend)

Went to Atlantis to check it out once. Probably my least favorite time in Nassau. The Aquarium was OK. But food amd drink was super overpriced and everything was so Vegas/disney-fied and NOT Bahamian, I didn't enjoy it. (but clearly I am in the minority.)

I know I am forgetting a couple of other things we have hit.

Have never managed to make it to Cable Beach yet, but really want to check it out.

Just remember when planning on extended outdoor activity, that it gets extremely hot walking around from Spring until late fall.

Take plenty of water and a cool rag for the heat.

Get out and enjoy the sites (the weeds growing in spots are gorgeous flowering things) and the nice People of Nassau.

Last time we were there we got off and walked to Señor Frogs! It's less than a mile from the dock you can see the cruise ships from the deck. The food is a little pricey but we had a few good drinks and some excellent views and people watching. It does tend to get a little crazy though, a lot of people looking for a party.
