gerena Posted November 14, 2005 #1 Share Posted November 14, 2005 Some have written that they used Peter from private tours. What has been your experience with pricing. I have been quoted $175 per person for an all day tour. He charges for gas, tickets to Corcovado and Sugarloaf, all extra. What has been your experience? This seems very high to me, but I understand he is good guide. Others are pricing $15-20$ per hour.
Jane110 Posted November 28, 2005 #2 Share Posted November 28, 2005 It's hard to say since you're not giving us all the info. How long is a day? Do the others that charge $15-$20 an hour include admission costs? We hired Peter in Rio for an evening. I don't recall what we paid him, but we felt his prices were very fair and we really liked him alot. I highly recommend him. Jane
gerena Posted November 28, 2005 Author #3 Share Posted November 28, 2005 Thanks Jane for your response, Yes, the other tour that came high recommended was$15/hr for all four people. The admission to Corcovado and Sugar Loaf were extra, but that is a small amount. I have hired Peter for the tour. We leave as soon as possible for Corcovado, then to Tijuca Natl. Park, Grumari tour, lunch, beaches ad to Sugar Loaf for sunset ad then back to ship. He charges $125 pp plus xpenses for Sugar Loaf, Corcovado, fuel, and lunch. He comes highly recommended, so I am sure we will enjoy it. I have also booked Carlos in Buenos Aires and Oliver in Iguazzu for airport pick up and on the way to the hotel, he will give us a tour of the Brazil side. They all work together in a way. Splinter Posted November 28, 2005 #4 Share Posted November 28, 2005 Get some additional prices. We used http://www.southstartours.com to arrange all our trips and beat the ship's tour prices, and had better tours. I know a lot of people have also found the same using http://www.portcompass.com
Jane110 Posted November 29, 2005 #5 Share Posted November 29, 2005 Rena, Yes, Carlos in BA and Pedro/Peter in Rio have a referrel partnership. Both are extremely nice. Both are low-key and not typical big tour operators. I'm not familiar w/ Oliver, but if Peter says he's good, I'm sure he is. I also worked with Cintia at www.WowArgentina.com for BA. She arranged our hotel and tango shows. She does tours too, like Carlos, but I had started asking questions of both of them months before our visit, so didn't want to give all my business to one. Just didn't seem fair since they both gave me advice. Both are extremely nice, honest and hard working. Jane
gottago2mexico Posted December 18, 2005 #6 Share Posted December 18, 2005 We paid about $50 a day per person for a private tour. Well worth the money, for sure. We did scout out Peter, but we ended up not using him. (See my other posts) This cost did not include admission fees, which are like $7 per person at Sugar Loaf. max128 Posted December 18, 2005 #7 Share Posted December 18, 2005 Hi Johann & Sandra Can you give me the name of the private tour operator and his email address so that I can contact him to make arrangements for us when we disembark in Rio in Apr 2006. Thanks Max
lwnbwlr Posted December 18, 2005 #8 Share Posted December 18, 2005 We used Luiz Amaral (travelrio.com) last December and were extremely pleased with his services. His guide (Cecil) escorted us around Rio for four days and we enjoyed every moment of it. Amaral was mentioned favorably in the Lonely Planet Rio guidebook. HALGirl Posted December 23, 2005 #9 Share Posted December 23, 2005 I also used Luiz Amaral in Rio and had Cecil for a guide. He was a great guide and I highly recommend them. Joanne
gottago2mexico Posted December 25, 2005 #10 Share Posted December 25, 2005 Max 128 - We went with Marcelo Esteves who we booked through Luiz Amaral tours (www.travelrio.com). Couldn't recommend them higher. Really went out of their way to make it special for us on our anniversary. Tell Luiz Johann & Sandra referred you - we told them we'd recommend them to everyone we knew - it would be nice if they knew we did.
ponstad Posted December 26, 2005 #11 Share Posted December 26, 2005 We just got back from Rio and were also very pleased with Cecil who works with Luis Amaral at http://www.travelrio. com. He is very knowledgable about history, speaks great English, and really made our two days in Rio memorable. It cost about $50 a day per person (there were 4 of us) and it was well worth it.
