Stand-By Charge?

We are booking a return flight from Miami and the only flight we can get departs at 3:45 pm. There is a 12:45 pm departure, but the cost for it is twice as much. Once we get to the airport, can we request seats on the 12:45 pm departure if they are available? If so, will there be a CHARGE to take this earlier flight? It is with US Airways.

Thanks for your help!

If you book the cheapest fare bucket, then the rules will say something about a certain cost to change flights plus the fare difference. Many airlines have something called "Same day confirmed" or similar, which they charge you $25 per person to change to a different flight that day, if seats are available. Not sure if USAir offers this or not. But you can always ask at checkin if you can standby for the earlier flight.
