onthelake Posted March 15, 2017 #1 Share Posted March 15, 2017 We will buy Pasmo cards in Tokyo for our stay there and trip to Yokohama to board our cruise. Are we able to use any residual $$ in the ports of Hakodate and Muroran? If not, can we redeem residual $$ in Yokohama?
BruceMuzz Posted March 16, 2017 #2 Share Posted March 16, 2017 Pasmo is one of about 10 different smart cards that are used on public transit around Japan. Recently the Japanese government merged these cards to allow them to be used in all the major cities around Japan. If you google this question, you will find the very complex rules for using them in various parts of the country. And yes, you can get a refund on the unused amount in Yokohama. rakuroda Posted March 19, 2017 #3 Share Posted March 19, 2017 Aloha, Suica or Pasmo are the two smart cards in Tokyo. We've had both and they operate the same. You can buy them at the airport or almost any large train/subway station. These cards are mostly used for the subways in the large cities and money can be added at most subway/train stations. These cards can also be used in a lot of convience stores. Just look for the smart card pad by the cashier. Even McDonalds in Japan takes them. You can buy personalized cards with your name on them. Read about them at the link below or Google search for more information. http://trulytokyo.com/tokyo-smart-cards-pasmo-and-suica/ Aloha, rak :D

someotherguy Posted March 20, 2017 #5 Share Posted March 20, 2017 I've used a Suica card all over Tokyo and Yokohama and out to Kamakura, and also in Kyoto and Fukuoka. Only place it didn't work (this was a few years ago) was Aomori.
rakuroda Posted March 20, 2017 #6 Share Posted March 20, 2017 Aloha, :D We bought Suica cards because we were going to use Japan Rail around Tokyo on our 1st trip to Japan. Suica can also be used on most of the subways in Japan, including Yokohama. Don't forget that you can use the cards at fast food restaurants (McDonalds, etc.) & convenience stores like Lawsons & 7-11. Just look for the scan pad by the cashier. Keeps from having a bunch of coins in your pocket. Aloha, rak :D:D
HiMagicFan Posted March 20, 2017 #7 Share Posted March 20, 2017 Thank you both - will have to research the suica a bit more now as it sounds like it will do the trick for us.
