Welcome to Cruise Critic!

I have read that this cannot be done any longer (but have not tried it myself). Have you tried calling the cruise line every so often to see if there have been any cancellations?

cannot be done. unless you have a booking number in hand, you will not be allowed to enter the terminal. the staff inside do not and cannot sell cabins.

Carnival lets you book the morning of, by phone only, until 10 am.

I have booked the morning of but not by going to the port. Had to call and make the reservation. Have done it on Carnival and on Princess. Call and see if you can book -- don't say anything about being on a waitlist. Be interesting to see if that works.
