We are stopping at Monte Carlo on our upcoming cruise. We have seen most of the towns except for Cannes. We are

thinking of spending the day there. This is an 8 hour on your own tour Any info appreciated. Thanks to any posters.

You might want to consider that the train (usually runs once or twice an hour) costs about $10 (one way) and takes from 50 -75 minutes. As to Cannes, you can certainly go shopping, walk along the Croisette, and perhaps take the petit train (essentially a local tram car train) that will drive you around the central part of town ( or you could walk). We sometimes stay in Cannes when on driving trips in the region...but we view Cannes as a base. During the daytime we usually leave the city to go to other places we prefer in the region. What we sometimes find amusing is that when cruisers tender into Cannes they will often go to either Nice or Monte Carlo. And those that dock in Monte Carlo will sometimes go over to Cannes. When it comes to the major cities of the area, our favorite (by far) is Nice. As to smaller places we prefer St Paul de Vence...and to a lesser degree the Village of Eze (which is not far from Monte Carlo).

As to what to do in Cannes....the main reason we stay in local hotels is that the prices are pretty reasonable and we have an area (in Cannes) where we love to go for dinner. There are also a couple of local beaches where we sometimes will spend a beach day. Unlike many of the beaches in the region, Cannes actually has sand (not pebbles). Perhaps it is telling that Trip Advisor's #1 thing to do in Cannes is go to the Isle del Lernins....which is not even in Cannes! Go figure. These are actually 4 islands off the coast of Cannes which have natural beauty but are basically quiet places. You could take a boat out to one of the islands and spend your day walking on a forest trail. Sainte-Marguerite (the largest of the islands) has some nice quiet places to have a picnic (you would have to bring your own food/drinks). Otherwise the main thing to do in Cannes is simply walk around town.
