Belize City with young kids

We are first time cruisers and are planning on cruising from Galveston on Carnival Breeze. One of the ports is Belize City which we've heard mixed reviews about. We are traveling with a 4 year old and a 9 year old. On Carnival's website, the 4 year old can do very few of the excursions listed. Suggestions on if we should reconsider the cruise or if Belize City has some fun and safe things to do with kids these ages? Thanks!

Not sure if you are opposed to independent tours but we had a great time doing cavetubing and ziplining with my kids (4 and 11) using Butts Up Cavetubing. It was a great bus tour to get there, then the hike through the rainforest where we all learned a lot and enjoyed the beauty. My kids ate termites and held a tarantula along the way as part of the tour, lol. We didn't have to carry our own tubes and there were several river crossings to get there, and the guides put my 4 yo in a tube and escorted him across while the older kids and adults walked across. I went ziplining through the rainforest (I believe there were about 10 different ziplines or something around that) afterwards with my 11 year old while my younger child and my parents were busy exploring the area. It was a great day.

We did one of the all day tours with Ship excursion to the ruins a year and a half ago with a 4 year old and a 7 1/2 year old. They were great . No problem. Can't remember the name , something like Luminia???

Lamanai? long river trip?

OP, you know your children and how they act and what their interests are. But I'd go with the cavetubing suggestion. Butts up, Cave Tubing R Us, Cavetubeing.bz are among the more popular, independent vendors. You do not have to zipline, as some ship excursions have both on the same excursion. Private vendors can just do the cavetubing.

For children of the ages of yours there's not a lot to do in Belize City. It is a working city not a tourist resort. Ship excursions to beaches are generally off shore at one of the cayes. But that's an option too.
