jrpbabe2003 Posted May 23, 2017 #1 Share Posted May 23, 2017 Does any cruiseline have an itinerary that is mostly cruising the glaciers? We love to just sit outside and relax on a cruise. We do have 2 kids, so a kids club would be nice as well. Just need to be pointed in the right direction. cganesh Posted May 23, 2017 #4 Share Posted May 23, 2017 The one way cruises either northbound or southbound have more glaciers. We did a NCL Seward to Vancouver that included 3-4 hrs at the big glacier between Seward and Icy Straight Point and a full day cruising glacier bay. In Juneau you can take city bus or taxi to Mendenhall Glacier where there is a nice facility by national parks service. In Skagway do the train (you can buy tickets at train ticket booth close to pier). Scenery is beautiful and ride very relaxing. If itinerary includes Icy Straight Point you can see whales from the wharf or along some walking trails by the water and see a very well done play done by young members of the local Inuit tribe about some of their culture. Get a balcony and be prepared for sensory overload especially in Glacier Bay. Cherie
Sequim88 Posted May 23, 2017 #5 Share Posted May 23, 2017 Our 1st Alaska cruise was mostly glaciers with Glacier Bay and College Fjord and billed as a Glacier Exploration cruise. More glaciers are available on one-way itineraries than R/T. College Fjord beat the pants of Glacier Bay and the calving at Harvard Glacier was spectacular. If we did another northbound we would definitely find an itinerary with College Fjord.
TheCalicoCat Posted May 24, 2017 #6 Share Posted May 24, 2017 (edited) Glacier viewing was our number 1 priority on our first AK cruise (with our 4.5 year old). We chose HAL Volendam for many reasons, but among them, the small boat excursion into Tracy Arm. The perspective of being in a small boat near the water line was so awe inspiring. (We wanted a smaller ship, round trip out of Vancouver, & the weekday departure/arrival worked well for us as well.) jrpbabe2003 Posted May 24, 2017 Author #7 Share Posted May 24, 2017 How was the HAL kids club? Our kids will be 4.5 and 7 at sailing. We have only done Disney cruises, so they are used to non stop fun. I noticed the club isn't always open.. TheCalicoCat Posted May 25, 2017 #8 Share Posted May 25, 2017 My son has been on HAL, Carnival, & RCCL and loved the camps on each! When he was 3, 4, & 5 years old, if we went to Baltimore, he would always ask if we could go on the big boat. No they are not open all the time, but I don't think they should be, we are (were) on a family vacation and we value quiet down time. We chose HAL to AK for the itinerary, it was our first HAL cruise & as a family we all enjoyed ourselves. So much so our next AK cruise will also be on HAL - 14 nights in July on Amsterdam (at just about 1/2 the price of Disney's 5 night cruise.)
