Updated Carnival Dream---questions please

We were on the Dream late last year, just weeks before it went into drydock. We experienced a couple of issues:

1) overwhelming smokiness on deck 5. On other Carnival ships we noticed it around the casino, but on the Dream it was like a heavy fog that never lifted

2)We were in deluxe ocean view on Riviera deck, midship. There was a sewer odor the entire cruise. And the room had the split bathroom with the mini tub. Once I started draining the tub while my husband was showering and everything started backing up into his side along with horrific odor.

Do the "improvements" seem to be mostly cosmetic? I'm curious if anyone who sailed this year have had similar problems.

We were on the Dream a few weeks after dry dock. The smoke in all of the ships casinos are like this, at least all the ones that I have been on, which is why we avoid it. I do not know how this could ever be fixed unless they made it non-smoking altogether. I never smelled the sewer smell even on my past cruise on the Dream. We were on Lido this cruise and on deck 2 in 2015. I think most of the updates were cosmetic plus they did add an Alchemy Bar, Blue Iguana Cantina, and Guys Burger.

Thanks kbh2. I understand that all casinos smell, but some I have even been able to enter slot tournaments as the ventilation seemed pretty good. I'm talking about not even being able to walk onto deck 5...it was miserable (i have asthma). And maybe the sewer smell is because we were on Riviera (and will be again)

I was on the Dream 4 weeks ago. We had an inside cabin on Riviera midship and never noticed any smells at all. Had this with the Paradise a couple yrs ago so I know what you're talking about.

As for deck 5, we felt the smoke really kept to the casino area and didn't spread. We did a lot of trivia in the Ocean Plaza just past the casino and never noticed any smoke smells. The dry dock was pretty extensive so I think they fixed some issues.

Difficult for me to say, because so much is centered on Deck 5 which was off limits to me. In fact, if I remember correctly, there was a smoking bar on the lobby deck, because we noticed the smoke right after getting on board. So we did no bars (not late nighters, so no loss there). The adult only outside area was very nice as was the main pool area. We are card players and spent a fair amount of time in the library, playing and drinking. Cruising for us means chilling, taking it easy, napping or reading books. My sister sailed Carnival once and they hated it. But they like night clubs and dancing and they did not like the way Carnival's clubs were all together. To each their own. Sorry I could not be more helpful.

Echo bobbyg11 about the casino - we were on the May 21 sailing of the Dream and once you were out of the casino, you didn't really smell smoke, not even at the elevators just aft of it.

As to "not to miss areas", new dining options are good - Guy's Burgers, Pig & Anchor BBQ (I thought the chicken was the best meat there - others weren't bad - yard bird just rose above), Tandoor Grill (I love Indian food - lots of good flavor), Alchemy Bar, Bonsai sushi (they have a sushi boat for 2 for $20-$25 that is a substantial amount of food - really good value and way better than the free sushi we got on other cruises). We also did the Chef's Table - on the Dream you now eat *IN THE GALLEY DURING DINNER SERVICE* - really get to see the behind the scenes stuff and appreciate the effort dining room staff puts in - I also got to make Chocolate Melting Cake with the pastry chef! Aft pool area is often quieter than main pool on Lido deck - not necessarily less crowded, but DJ and many activities focus around the main pool.

TNPirate...thanks for all the advice! I am SO excited they added the Guy's burger joint. On another ship this was my go to for lunch. May try the BBQ and the Alchemy bar sounds interesting.

ponza17...I agree with you on the pasta bar. My only complaint there was the person at the order station was a witch and hopefully she is gone now. This was so much better than going to the buffet.

Speaking of the buffet, there were not many things I liked there. Most of the food was bland and the desserts were mostly awful. Except for the day they had the chocolate station...if you like chocolate...yum. I did enjoy the Italian they served one day.

We did not see it on the Dream, but when we were on another cruise, forget the ship at the moment, they had daily trivia which was a lot of fun. We were broken into 2 teams and after the week long competition, our team won. We got the most ghastly tasting bottle of champagne and of course the ship on a stick. :)

We were on Dream in January and my only complaint was the smoke in and around the casino area! Never played a penny because of the smoke. I was hoping that the dry dock would address it but, from a couple of posts, it does not sound like it did much to alleviate it. :(

what are the great places on the ship that are not to be missed?

Here's my list.

Ocean Plaza - It's great to go hear the rock band in a smoke free environment. So much better than the casino area on other classes of ships.

Lanai - It is fun to be able to walk around the perimeter of the ship on an outside deck.

Pasta bar - Great food and service fixed just like you like it.
