Very interesting information in this thread. I knew from a young age I was adopted (as was my older sister) but my parents made it perfectly clear the subject was not up for discussion. I did some research after they passed in 1993 and didn't come up with much other than an adoption registry I found in New York (which still supports sealed records.) Other than a few bits of non-identifying information I was able to request from the agency that secured the adoption (Newburgh, Orange County), I have run up against dead-ends. All info I received contradicted that which my adoptive parents told me (except for the fact that my birth mother was Jewish - that was accurate), along with the fact that I was NOT born in the hospital but at a small apartment owned by Mount St. Mary's.

 

In my humble opinion, it is unconscionable that records are entirely sealed and one cannot even find out medical history or any information in certain states. This is one subject that strikes a raw nerve with me ... thanks for letting me vent.
