I'd probably stay on the ship as well. yes - given that it IS an island in the Cari' I'm SURE there's decent diving someplace. But in many many visits to the major ports I haven't found it. The one exception is Port Antonio but then again that's not exactly a major port. Ocho, Mo Bay, Kingston .... no, I can't recommend the diving. Unfortunately Jam' allowed the use of fish traps for a good long time and that pretty much zapped the fish population. I'd not seen much recovery on any of my trips.
