Opinions wanted - Bday Cruise - Maybe B2B?

Hi

I know I have to make the final decision and nobody can choose for me, but I'm hoping my cruise critic friends will share their opinions. Only other people who obsessively plan and think about their cruises like I do will appreciate my indecisiveness.

I have a big birthday coming up in 2018 - I'm turning 50. On milestone birthdays I like to be away on my birthday on vacation. And I'm being a little bit childish about it too since I want to be away on my actual birthday - April 11. Originally I wanted to cruise to either Europe or Alaska but as we all know my birthday is in the wrong month for that. I briefly considered a land trip to Europe - to Venice and Paris with a trip to Euro Disney (or whatever it's called now) too. But that's a lot of planning, packing and unpacking. I would really rather take a cruise. Luckily my husband who is one year younger than me and will turn 50 in 2019 has a birthday in late June so I'm hoping to convince him to be on an Alaska cruise for his 50th bday.

All of my cruises have been on Royal Caribbean. We're Diamond Plus. We also enjoy gambling and are Casino VIPs which basically means we get casino rates when we can (lately pretty decent prices) and free drinks in the casino and no charge if we take money out against our sea pass in the casino.

Wow - this is getting longer than I expected but I want to give people the background.

Maybe a year ago I booked a cruise on Celebrity Reflection for my big birthday. I booked a Celebrity Suite which from my research sounds like it's along the lines of maybe a Grand or Owners suite in Royal language.

The itinerary is what drew me to this as well as it being a relatively new ship. It's an 11 night cruise from Fort Lauderdale visiting Grand Cayman, Cartagena Colombia, Aruba overnight, Curaçao, and Bonaire. When we booked there was a promotion going on that gave us the premium drink package, free wi-fi, onboard credit (I think $300) and gratuities. And I really want to do the Aruba Trikes excursion in Aruba.

While the Crown and Anchor status sort of carries over, we'll be Elite on Celebrity even though it may be our first cruise with them; the casino status doesn't carry over so we start like brand new gamblers on Celebrity. For some this isn't a big deal, but we enjoy our time in the casino and the perks we receive on Royal due to it.

My other concerns with the Celebrity cruise is that it leaves the day after Easter which means we would fly out on Easter Sunday. OK, we can live with missing one family Easter. It's also the last sailing before the ship heads to Europe. And I'm worried that it may be too "quiet" for us. I like the bells and whistles on the new big ships.

My husband Scott made an interesting suggestion after our last cruise...Why don't we cruise on Royal Caribbean instead, on one of the new big ships like Harmony (which I have been wanting to go on) in one of the unique suites. The itinerary is kind of boring and it only does a 7 night cruise. So he suggested doing a back to back. Now I'm getting interested. He also said what about a side to side if there are 2 different ships I wanted to go on.

As much as the itinerary of the Reflection was a draw, in the past I've gone to the different things an island is known for - like swimming with the stingrays in the Caymans. Lately, we've been finding a beach and enjoying the day snorkeling and playing on the beach. So does it really matter which island I am on as long as I can find a nice beach?

So I started looking at the itineraries. Ideally if we do a true back to back on Harmony we would stay in the same cabin for the 2 weeks. Unfortunately, given that it's just over 6 months away, it's not available. I want to book a Crown Loft Suite. I can get one the second week, but the first week right now a Junior Suite is the only suite available. I could book it that way and wait list for a different suite (or more likely just keep checking myself if something else becomes available and move to that).

The itinerary for the 4/7 Harmony Eastern Cruise is St Thomas, San Juan, and Labadee. With the recent damage due to Hurricane Irma not sure if St Thomas is still a viable option but I'm sure the substitute will be fine if it comes to that.

The itinerary for the 4/14 Harmony Western Cruise is Labadee, Falmouth, and Cozumel

I've heard that switching cabins on a. B2B isn't that difficult. I've always wanted to do a B2B also.

Then I also looked at the Freedom 6 night cruise on 4/8 leaving from Fort Lauderdale and visiting Grand Cayman, Costa Maya (never been there) and Cozumel. We could do that then get on Harmony for the second week but that would be 2 Western itineraries even though the only duplicate port is Cozumel.

I also looked at Allure of the Seas out of Fort Lauderdale which sails Sunday (Harmony is Saturday) which does 7 night Western on 4/8 to Labadee, Falmouth, and Cozumel then Easter on 4/15 to Nassau, St Thomas, and St Kitts. But if I'm going to do Oasis class, I really want to do Harmony.

I haven't called the Casino booking department yet to even see what the casino rates are for the sailings I'm interested in, but if I go by recent history of the prices we've been paying for recent cruises and upcoming cruises, the prices have been pretty good.

So I'm looking for any opinions, suggestions - even if it's something other than my initial thoughts above.

Thank you for your help as I plan my birthday cruise.

Here are my thoughts on my recent experiences ...

I really enjoyed staying in the Crown Loft Suite on Allure and it is one I would recommend. Concierges were great as was the Coastal Kitchen restaurant manager.

We were in Sky class but noticed that ones in Star Class got special VIP treatment with their genies so it is worth considering if you can afford it to step up to next level of suites. I believe Royal Crown Loft Suite is Star Class.

I have stayed in the Aquatheatre suite previously on Oasis and enjoyed that as well.

So for me, a 7 day cruise on an itinerary which includes Labadee would make it special and my preference would be to pay for one of the Star class suites and enjoy the VIP benefits instead of doing a B2B.

The other option I would consider is a suite on one of the Quantum class ships. I have not checked their itineraries, but for a ship experience they do offer something different IMO.

Have you thought about a B2B on Reflection, staying on for the TA?

Hi.

I haven't thought of that. I just looked. However, I think that would keep us away too long. We still work.

The original Reflection cruise I have booked is 11 nights and the transatlantic is 14 nights - that would be a total of 25 sailing nights not counting flying down to FL the day before and if I'm in Europe wanting to stay there longer.

The TA idea is a good one so I started to look when other ships are doing them thinking that would get me to Europe and maybe I could spend a few days going to places the ship may not go that I want to - like Venice and Paris.

However, the TA's all go later in April and I really want to be on vacation on my actual birthday

Thank you

Hi.

Unfortunately none of the Star Class suites are available for the dates I want to sail.

If we're flying I would prefer to sail for more than 7 days also. I know we're only flying from NJ to FL, but we've gotten spoiled with driving to Bayonne for the last few cruises.

We cruised on Quantum in 2015 when it was in NJ and have cruised on Anthem several times already with another Anthem cruise coming up in January. I checked the itinerary for April and it's doing a pretty boring 7 night to the Bahamas and Port Canaveral. It's convenient to cruise out of NJ which is why we've been on Anthem a few times already. I want to do something different for my birthday.

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the Crown Loft Suite. It seems like something kind of unique which is why I'm looking to try one. I will keep an eye out in case one of the Star class suites becomes available too. I'll also keep an eye out for those Aquatheater suites. If I end up B2B and have to go between Aquatheater and Crown Loft, that sounds like it could be fun.

Thank you

That Celebrity Southern Carribbean itinerary is great and the Reflection is supposed to be beautiful. The only thing is the people on the cruise would have lots of seniors considering you are traveling right after Passover and Easter.

Have you been to Europe yet? It may not be on your birthday but the Symphony in Europe would be the best solution .

Hi.

I am not too worried about mainly seniors on the cruise. We have been doing 12 nights on Quantum in 2015 then Anthem the last few years late January and that is the demographic then too. We are among the youngest on the ship.

I did a Mediterranean cruise on serenade in 2012 with a friend of mine (girls cruise no husbands) and it was a lot of fun. It didn't go to Venice or Paris which I would like to see next time I get to Europe. My friend Cathy is also turning 50 next year so maybe I can convince her to do another girls cruise to Europe to celebrate both of our milestone birthdays. Her bday is September so we could go in between our birthdays.

Thank you

That B2B itinerary would b my dream cruise. I love snorkeling and there is no where better than ABC's, Grand Cayman and Cozumel. I'm making notes on your choice because I'm putting it on my bucket list. Enjoy!!!

I heard the trikes company has branched into a few other islands now too. Sounds like it will be a fun excursion.

I think so. However, you really need two to go, and I sail solo alot. You and your husband will have a great time. Easy to operate, stick shift. Should be fun!!!

Happy bday in advance. I too am turning the big 5-0 next year, in February, and also wanted to be away for the day. However because I really want to do a Med cruise to celebrate, I decided to do a 1 week Caribbean cruise over my actual birthday, and then do the Med cruise later in the summer. That way I get the best of both worlds - oh I am going to milk this one!!!!

Hi

So I am still waffling on the bday cruise.

Maybe I should stick with celebrity reflection for a new experience on a line I haven't been on.

Also I worry that B2B will have that last day of cruise melancholy around the ship even if we are staying on.

I called Royal casino program and had them price out Harmony B2B, then switching ships with freedom then Harmony, then harmony with allure. They were super nice.

I just can't decide yet

I think I am making everyone else crazy talking about it. At least people here understand [emoji3]

I am turning the big 5-0 in August 2018, so I know what you are going through. I really wanted to do a Panama Canal cruise for my bday, but not possible in August. Like you, I wanted to be gone over my birthday. Our 28th anniversary is 2 days after my birthday, so we will be onboard for that too.

We are Diamond on RCCL & taking our 1st Celebrity cruise in two weeks. It is a 10 day southern Caribbean itinerary in a Royal Suite on the Equinox. I can let you know more what I think of Celebrity in a month. [emoji6](We are doing the Trike tour in Aruba!) I am looking forward to the 10 day adventure. Typically we do 7 nights or less, we have done 1 transatlantic that was 12 nights. We loved it.

My opinion on what you are looking at:

- I wouldn't do B2B if I cannot stay in the same cabin. I would get the end of cruise blahs if I had to pack & unpack between them.

- Did you get the GO BEST option for Celebrity? If so, you will have free drinks all, over the ship, not just in the casino. You might get it with just the suite. Check your reservation.

- Are you an Mlife member? If so, you may be able to withdrawal $$ from your credit card in the casino without a fee.

- Are you a smoker? The casinos on Celebrity cruises are smoke free. To me it is a plus, not for everyone though.

- Snorkeling in the A,B,C islands is supposed to be far superior than the Bahamas.

- If the other couple traveling with you isn't in a Sky suite or higher, you won't be able to take advantage of all the suite perks which would be a bummer. -- unless you leave them standing outside Michael's Club, etc!

- I have had a Royal Genie on RCCL, it is AWESOME!

- Cruising the week after Easter you will have LOTS of kids on RCCL, Celebrity will also have a few, but you should not be over run.

What I decided to do for my birthday is get a suite on the Oasis that has a Royal Genie. It is a boring, 7 night itinerary (who knows what ports will be open next summer). I decided on it for a few reasons: 1) I wanted to be gone on my bday day 2) 3 other couples are joining us and a 7 day cruise was better for them 3) I wanted some awesome, so I booked a suite with a Genie.

I am milking this a tad too -- I also booked another cruise the following January. It is a 10 day ultimate Caribbean on the Celebrity Reflection in a Signature Suite. It has a more interesting itinerary & is on a ship we have never been on. That cruise will be just the 2 of us. I like the idea of B2B, but we still have one son in high school. Being gone longer than 10/11 days is asking for trouble!

Hi Vickie

Happy early 50th birthday to you too. And Happy Anniversary.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that thinks about a big bday on a ship like I do. I looked at Panama Canal cruises but it was an older ship and I like the newer ships. I could have done it over my birthday.

Definitely let me know your thoughts on Celebrity when you return. And what you thought of the Trikes excursion.

I keep thinking about the packing and unpacking on a B2B if it's not the same cabin. You are right, it would annoy me and make me feel like I don't have a continuous trip. I like to get unpacked and have everything put in it's place, then I'm ready to start enjoying vacation. Even if it's a hotel same idea - I like to be unpacked.

Yes I am pretty sure we have go Best. It was a promotion when we booked a suite - 4 perks were included and I'm pretty sure they were premium beverage package, WiFi, gratuities, and OBC.

We are not MLife members.

We don't smoke so no smoking in the casino is great.

We were supposed to travel with another couple who would have booked a regular balcony room and I worried about us not being able to enjoy the suite perks since we wouldn't just leave them in the dust. But they aren't able to join after all so it's just Scott and I.

I'm guessing the week after Easter 11 nights on Celebrity would be less kids than a 7 night on Royal on Harmony.

Your birthday cruise sounds great. It seems like we have to pick between a better itinerary or a better ship.

Milk it all you can - we only turn 50 once :)

I like that you have the second cruise too.

Thank you for all the feedback

Noreen

Have you considered the B2B harmony and wait to see if the crown loft becomes available for the second week closer to final payment? Or is it available the week before?

Hi

I thought of that, but that would be kind of stressful. I would prefer staying in one cabin for the whole time if possible.

Then I thought it may be fun to try different cabins on the same ship, but then it's the hassle of packing and unpacking.

The first week had a Crown Loft available and the second week didn't have anything higher than a junior suite. I think I'd be OK going from Crown Loft to either Owners or Grand Suite, but honestly, the more I think about the unpacking, then packing to move cabins, then unpacking again, I'm not feeling it.

So my saga of driving my poor husband crazy as I go back and forth on this will continue. I have to give him credit, he keeps telling me to pick whatever I want to do and he just wants me to be happy. So sweet

Thank you

Noreen

I'm joining the 50 train, mine is in January 2019. We will be putting a deposit on the Independence 6 night Eastern, which is one week after my actual birthday day. It's not that important to me, personally, to be traveling on the day.

I hope you find something that makes you happy and will be enjoyable.

Happy Early Birthday to you too.

Growing up my mother always made a big deal out of our birthdays. That's probably why I want to be away on the actual day. It's only milestones I feel this way. The average birthday I am ok with a nice dinner out with my husband.

Thank you

So I'm thinking you really want to stay with RC. You either pack and unpack on the same ship or pack and unpack on two different ships. RC Harmony 4/7 and RC Allure 4/15. OR, Serenade 4/9, 11 day in the GS?

Funny you say that. Yesterday I was definitely leaning that way.

Today I am leaning towards Celebrity since it is new (never sailed Celebrity before) and an itinerary I am excited about.

My mind will probably change again by this afternoon

Thank you
