beezer248 Posted October 12, 2017 #1 Share Posted October 12, 2017 We are booked on the Dec. 2nd trip out of San Juan. We booked air to arrive on Friday (day before departure) and a room at the Ritz Carlton. The Ritz is now closed until next summer. We just re-booked at the Vanderbilt Condado. I called the hotel directly and they said that they never had to close due to the hurricane. A little concerned as they are on the same side of the island as the Ritz and don't know if the hotel is truly up and running. And from what I have heard, the airport is still day to day as to how many flights are getting in and out. We too tried to cancel with Windstar- offered to take future cruise credit- but were told we could cancel for a total loss or take the cruise as booked. We are ok with the new itinerary but truly don't know if the San Juan leg of the journey will work out. We feel so badly for all the islands affected, and while they depend on tourism dollars, don't want to be any kind of a burden to an already fragile situation. Is anyone else nervous about getting to/from SJU and the condition of the hotels?
Astalarasta Posted October 13, 2017 #2 Share Posted October 13, 2017 Yes, we are a bit nervous too. We are on the same sailing with two nights booked before and after the cruise. We booked an Old San Juan boutique hotel - El Convento for the first two nights and a Condado boutigue hotel- Olive Hotel, for the post cruise nights. According to the hotels Facebook pages El Convento sustained some damage, but continues to host guests and Olive says that they never closed. Both claim to be planning to accept new reservations by Nov 1. They seem to be very optimistic...but these are people in the tourism trade. December is a good few weeks off ,so there is still time for the recovery to progress. Hopefully the recovery will progress much faster, which is our hope for the people of Puerto Rico. Since the hoteliers seem to be optimistic, we are keeping to our plans and hope to make the best of it and spend our tourist dollars on the island for a few days before and after the cruise. This is only my second cruise and will be my husband's first, so this is new travel territory for us. We are pleased with the new itinerary, under the circumstances,in fact, I enjoyed the sea day that I spent on last years Jewels of the Windward Islands enough that I was a little disappointed that DH would not be able to experience one on the original itinerary. He will get to experience one now. Hopefully, we will see you on-board and we can talk about what a great stay we all had in San Juan.
put me on a ship Posted October 15, 2017 #3 Share Posted October 15, 2017 We also are a little nervous about the situation. We actually have double booked hotels for the night before. We originally booked Hampton Inn, their website says it will be up Oct. 31, but on another board someone said their reservation for November was cancelled. We go in Dec. and haven't heard anything yet, but we also booked Condado Plaza Hilton, which I know is open now. Many of the hotels that are functional are housing relief workers, so reservations are hard to come by.

put me on a ship Posted October 17, 2017 #6 Share Posted October 17, 2017 The Hampton Inn site now says no new or existing reservations until Jan. 1 at the earliest. I will be calling tomorrow, we double booked Hampton Inn and Condado Plaza Hilton. I will also call American Airlines, since our flight is scheduled to land around 9 pm. (We sail Dec. 9). I'm not going to lie, this situation is making me very nervous. Puerto Rico is still in bad shape, and I don't like the idea of going there in the next couple months. We will go, unless Windstar cancels, but I'm thinking we might fly in the day of.
beezer248 Posted October 17, 2017 Author #7 Share Posted October 17, 2017 This is the entire article that my travel agent sent to me.: Puerto Rico Tourism: Island is on Path to Quick Recovery By James Shillinglaw, Oct 13, 2017 ShareFacebookTwitterLinkedInEmail If you listen to the news, it would seem to be months before Puerto Rico can restore power and services to repair its crucial tourism infrastructure. But Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC) says airlines, cruise lines and hotel partners’ joint relief efforts to resume operations just three few weeks after Hurricane Maria hit the island hard show the importance of Puerto Rico as a destination and hub in the Caribbean. And these efforts are starting to see results. Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) is now fully operational with all airlines back to regular schedules, though some carriers did cut back service initially. Royal Caribbean International and other cruise lines have now resumed homeport operations in San Juan. Major hotels are at full capacity, many with relief workers, but they are taking new reservations beginning this week. “We’re glad to report that the preparedness measures put into place have allowed for what we’re seeing will be a quick recovery for our tourism industry,” said José Izquierdo, PRTC’s executive director. “We are confident that the progress we have shown just a few weeks out is a sign of the resiliency and strength of our people. We expect to welcome visitors to the Island in the weeks ahead, especially those looking to travel with a purpose as we’re working to finalize compelling voluntourism activities for those who want to head out beyond San Juan and help the communities in greater need.” Following are some updates that PRTC says confirms the island’s progress on the path to recovery: The Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) is fully operational with scheduled domestic and international flights. Rafael Hernández Airport (Aguadilla), Mercedita Airport (Ponce), José Aponte de la Torre Airport (Ceiba), Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport (Isla Grande) and the Antonio Rivera Rodríguez Airport (Vieques) are operational and offering limited service. PRTC says it is in direct communication with the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) partners who have shown extreme commitment to Puerto Rico and attest to the industry’s resiliency. San Juan Harbor is open and resumed homeport operations this past weekend with the departure of Royal Caribbean International’s Adventure of the Seas. Over 2,000 passengers are expected to travel in and out of San Juan to embark on these journeys. More than 80 hotel properties on the island are open and most taking new reservations for the upcoming months. For a full list of the status of hotels, click on Puerto Rico Hotels. PRTC says that while an island-wide assessment of historic and other tourist attractions is still under way, a number of key attractions have already opened. These include the Puerto Rico Museum of Art in Santurce and the Ponce Museum of Art. Bacardi tours will open to the public on Nov. 1. El Morro and other San Juan historic sites are expected to open in the coming weeks. The public spaces for which admission is not required are open. Main transportation companies, as well, as taxi drivers, are fully operating and providing ongoing service to visitors. Local travel agencies also are operating and providing service to travelers. The Mall of San Juan and Plaza Las Américas are open for shoppers. “The support received from our industry partners to date has been remarkable and we continue to welcome relief efforts from partners who are interested in helping the people of Puerto Rico as we focus on rebuilding our Island,” said Izquierdo. “We are confident that with the continuous support of our industry partners and visitors coming to our Island, we can build a stronger Puerto Rico.” For the latest tourism industry updates, visit http://www.SeePuertoRico.com. For information on other infrastructure improvements (related to hospitals, ATMs, supermarkets, etc.) across the island, click on Puerto Rico Status. Visitors with questions about travel to Puerto Rico can call the PRTC at 787-522-5960, talk via PRTC’s Live Chat or call their hotels directly for more information. put me on a ship Posted October 17, 2017 #8 Share Posted October 17, 2017 The list of hotels is old, and no longer correct. I assure you, Hampton Inn is NOT accepting new or existing reservations until Jan. 1. This is one we had booked in December, and we are now cancelled. put me on a ship Posted October 17, 2017 #12 Share Posted October 17, 2017 I think we are going to change our flights, and fly in the morning of. Too many unknowns. We have a confirmed reservation at Condado Plaza Hilton, but with limited services (the rep didn't know exactly what that meant). I'm assuming it means we may or may not have A/C, food, water. And they reserve the right to give our room to relief workers. Also, our flight on Friday didn't get us in to San Juan until around 9 PM. Currently, there is a curfew, and we may or may not be able to get transportation to the hotel.
Briansbrain Posted October 17, 2017 #13 Share Posted October 17, 2017 I have been using b......com, first time for the decanter. I learned it was closedown cruise critic. Astalarasta Posted October 18, 2017 #14 Share Posted October 18, 2017 This thread got me thinking that it might be a good idea to confirm with both of our hotels. I was able to confirm with Olive Hotel by e-mail , but not with El Convento. I was able to confirm with El Convento, by phone and the reservations person I spoke to said that they were without e-mail and phones for some time. Given the communications issues on the island, it might be a good idea to try different method to get it touch, since hotels might be open but having communications problems. .
