Older ships may have a certain nostalgic charm, but they also have: few or no balconies, limited dining options, no activities beyond shuffleboard and bingo and gambling, and a higher per passenger cost. New smaller ships have built in those extras that an older small ship would not have, but the best of them are in the more expensive premium and luxury cruise lines.

So it was just sort of an observation lounge. No bar I assume.

No, there was a small bar and tables. You could order drinks from the bartender. The steps were a little frightening especially in high heels!

Had the opportunity to sail Sun Viking a few times in the 80's, fun times. You had to pay cash for drinks....Viking Crown Lounge steps always seemed steeper leaving, the longer you stayed up there the steeper the stairs when you left ;)..... on one Sun Viking cruise the Capitan on several late afternoons would come up to the pool deck and take a quick swim, he would then go over to the pool bar and buy everyone drinks...great memories!!!
