Just wondering for those have recently been to San Juan airport.

We'll be flying in the day of our cruise (Celebrity Summit) next week, and I was wondering how is trying to catch a cab or should I get a service to pick us up? TIA for your info

They had a close enough flight to almost miss it, but they didn’t walk off with their luggage? Eek.

Nope, they thought they had plenty of time but ended having to wait for almost 2 hours to get their luggage from the box truck. They then had to do the USDA inspection, check in, bag drop and get through security.

We did the self-debark, took a taxi, used a porter at the airport and did check in, USDA inspection, bag drop and through security (TSA precheck) in about 15 minutes.

We had tons of time but opted to go the taxi/porter route to help the economy in PR.

We just returned yesterday and there were plenty of cabs both at the airport and cruise port.

Thanks so much! We're arriving 11/18 for the Summit, and while I prefer taxis, was concerned. Great news. We'll be supporting the economy there.

What does that mean, from the box truck? I was picturing them waiting in the terminal for their luggage but you’re obviously describing a process I’m unaware of.

For RCCL transfers people go on a bus and their luggage is loaded on a box truck. When you get to the airport you need to find the truck your luggage is on and retrieve it. This is all done on the sidewalk outside the terminal. People have reported waiting hours for their luggage.

Well that sounds awful. Is that just for San Juan?

I'm not sure. We never use the ship transfers. We prefer to self-debark (we tend to pack lightly) and either take a cab or arrange our own transportation. For San Juan this was doubly important to us because we wanted to help their economy by using the taxi drivers and porters.

  • 2 weeks later...

I cruised on the Celebrity Summit on November 4-11 from San Juan. I noticed plenty of taxis at both the airport and the port. I took a taxi to the port; it cost $23. I was offered a free shuttle by Celebrity to the airport, which I took. It was a long wait before we got moving (about 40 minutes), but I was literally one of the first people off the ship and everyone else had to catch up. It's possible Celebrity may offer free shuttles to and/or from SJU for current and near-term future cruises, so it might be worth asking around about them.
