It's better just to not look if you insist on booking before the final payment is due. It's true even when flying. We pay full fare for first class but know that the majority of people sitting up there with us have gotten there using miles/points for the upgrade. It's the price we pay for not being super frequent flyers. Just part of the cost of going the way we want to go. If you aren't picky about cabin location or type, then only book after the final payment from now on.
