Wheelchair for Embarkation

This is the first time of our needing a wheelchair to get on the ship. A while back I spoke to the Special Needs Dept for Celebrity and reserved a chair for boarding the Silhouette tomorrow. However I should have asked how I go about getting the chair at the port. Unfortunately the department is closed so they’re no help. Does anyone have any information for me? Thanks.

I cruised with my mother who was mobility challenged several times. Each time we exited the car at the port we were approached by someone asking if we needed wheelchair assistance. I'm not sure if they were port or cruiseline staff. A cruiseline staff person arrived with a wheelchair, then escorted us through check-in and onto the ship. One time we were escorted all the way to the buffet.

When you arrive at the port tell the first person you see inside the terminal that you need a wheelchair to board and they will get you one. Sometimes they're outside the terminal entrance and all you need do is ask. I use a w/c every time I cruise and have never had a problem.....if you arrive at a time when they're very busy, you might have to wait a few minutes but that's the only problem I've ever experienced. They take me from the terminal entrance through all the registration and onto the ship. when you're leaving the ship at the end of the cruise check the box on your departure info that you need assistance disembarking and they will tell you what time and where to go to meet the wheel chairs. They will take you to the curb or bus whatever you need....and it's nice to tip them.

Just to follow up.....all the advice was just perfect and worked like a charm. I really appreciate it and will be in the know for next time. Many thanks.

So glad all went well for you. I am also really pleased you reported back as your positive comments may reassure a future cruiser with concerns.

Owing to being in a (very large) orthopaedic boot on our last cruise I needed help in a variety of areas (including the ‘ducking stool’ to get in and out of the pool). We were very apprehensive to the point of considering cancelling our cruise but I was desperate for a change of four walls!

From the start of our cruise until the end staff could not have been more helpful. Cruising has a lot of benefits when you have mobility issues!

Yes it certainly does....we used to do river cruises until I had a serious accident that left me with permanent walking and balance issues.....I discovered that river cruising could not accommodate me but ocean cruising and airlines could..... some better than others.....and X is among the best for treating handicapped as vital human beings with feelings....that's why I won't sail with anyone else! :D

  • 2 weeks later...

Disembarked the Silhouette yesterday in Fort Lauderdale. I’ll post a follow up report on that process once we get home. Unfortunately it was a bit of a goat rope and not as easy as getting aboard. Stay tuned.
