Euro vs US$

Hi. We are aware that vendors at some destinations, particularly islands using ec$ will take US$. Does anyone know if US$ can be used in port towns in Barbados, Martinique, or Guadeloupe?

in marttinique only a few vendors accepted us dollars, i hear guadaloupe is the same

We went to Harbour Lights in Barbados last fall-no problem using us currency there ( including cabs)

When we went to Martinique Euros are required by most all vendor and tour operators/taxis. We brought Euros with us to Martinique and plan to do the same when we visit Guadaloupe.

Martininique and Guadaloupe are both overseas departments of France , and as such are considered part of mainland France whose official currency is the Euro

Don't bother with US$ in Guadeloupe you need euros, we were there Nov 2017.

You'll have no problem whatsoever using the US Dollar in Barbados.

Never had a problem in Martinique most places.

Guadeloupe was the only place in the Caribbean we've found that had places that did not want our US Dollar except for a few places ....

Agree with above but where USD were no used I had no problems using my credit card, make sure you have no foreign transaction fees.

Just in Guadeloupe Nov 2023.  All vendors in the port area accepted US$.  The Duty Free had no problem with my credit card. The tour boat operator gladly accepted tips in $ or Euros. It's probably a different story once outside the port gates but I didn't go there.

Take Euros to Martinique and Guadaloupe.
Thats the currency they prefer and its unfair for you to expect them to do the exchanging.
