Cruising with kiddos Posted February 22, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 22, 2018 We are looking to do catch and release fishing in an Alaska port (Juneau, Ketchikan, or Skagway). We do not want a tour off the ship, but rather looking to rent poles and fish locally. Anyone with experience doing this?
Suzanne123 Posted February 22, 2018 #2 Share Posted February 22, 2018 I’m assuming from your name that you want something for the family instead of serious fishermen. If so, then I can recommend Chum Fun in Juneau. You fish from the dock right next to the hatchery. Very nice owners. Big friendly dog. http://www.chumfun.com/
Cruising with kiddos Posted February 23, 2018 Author #3 Share Posted February 23, 2018 Thank you. I will check them out. I am actually looking for my husband and father in law, so I appreciate any suggestions!
Suzanne123 Posted February 23, 2018 #4 Share Posted February 23, 2018 Oh! In that case, they could do some real fishing in Ketchikan with http://hookupflyshop.com/. You don’t have to do the pricey fly out fishing. DH enjoyed his time with them.
Brulefisher Posted February 23, 2018 #5 Share Posted February 23, 2018 FYI... most of the salmon caught off that dock are snagged. When the fish have spawning on the brain its hard to get them to bite. The fly fishing can be very good later in the summer but you would probably need an outfitter. chewap Posted February 23, 2018 #6 Share Posted February 23, 2018 Ketchikan in August when the Pinks are running. You can rent a pole and get a fishing license just south of the cruise pier and fish in the Ketchikan River on the bridge and in the approximate area going to Creek Street. A couple of years ago, A fisherman from NY was catching salmon every 10 minutes. He had to have his wife take a several pictures of each Salmon caught. Quite of few of the salmon died because they were out of the water too long. He was oblivious that he was killing fish by his actions, even though there were several dead salmon right in front of him.

Doesn't surprise me, especially with as fragile as pinks are to begin with Sent from my iPhone using Forums
