Mount Etna Tour and 4x4

Our Celebrity Cruise this summer stops in Sicily. We are going to do a private tour to Mt Etna with Rome in Limo. They have suggested taking the cable car (30€ pp ) to the top and then hiring a 4x4 to take us to the edge of the crater. The walk is rather long over rough terrain, which is not an option for me. Has anyone ever taken the 4x4? Is taking the cable car to the top and then going to the edge of the crater worth it?
