What happened to the Festival?

My DS was looking back through some old photos and she said that she was on the Carnival Festival in 1984 (talk about your past guest). Does anyone know what happened to the lovely lady (the ship, not my sister  )? Was she reborn under a new name or scuttled to become the next coral reef?

She was scrapped at ALANG.

"On 4th June 2003 Big Red Boat III (sailing as Big Boat, ex Carnival Festivale) steamed from Freeport enroute to the shipbreakers at Alang, India, via Gibraltar. She had the sad distinction of being the first Carnival Cruise liner to be scrapped."

Oh, fond memories of my first sailing in 84 as well.. The movie theater and those tacky hats, horns and lei's at the formal dinners.

I'm still trying to find the oh so elusive Festival pin for my collection. I know that they made them for her in her later sailings so if anyone has one they don't want, let me know please.

Also made our first sailing on her in '84. Does anyone remember when, as Big Red Boat III, her passengers from Galveston had to be off loaded in Central America somewhere when the company went out of business. This was only a year or so before she went to the breakers in India.

My DH and I went on our second cruise (first cruise our Honeymoon on the Tropicale in 1985) on the Festivale in 1987 out of San Juan. It was the cruise we took before we started to plan our family. I have pictures of us wearing the hawaiian lays and party hats on formal nights. We just booked our next Carnival cruise for Feb. 25, 2006, on the Elation. This will be our 9th cruise, 8th on Carnival. I noticed on the Carnival website cruise history, they don't include these early cruises. Anyone else notice that?

Wow- what a tiny boat!!!! I bet it was fun though!!! We are looking at doing a Seabourn cruise through the Panama Canal- I am looking forward to the smaller ship- We just got off the Fascination and we loved it! We thought it was actually better than the Miracle- but we are weird... we like the smaller boats.

My first cruise was on the Festival in November 1989. I remember thinking how HUGE the ship was. After having sailed on some much larger ships recently, I can't believe how small it really was. It was my first cruise and I had a great time. I do remember some weird things about our cabin. The sink was in the room. Not in the bathroom! Anyone else remember that?

My 1st cruise was on the Festivale also. I went with 3 of my girlfriends and we were very lucky and were upgraded to one of only 10 balcony suites on the ship. The funny thing was, these suites were the most expensive on the ship but were only about the size of a standard balcony cabin on today's ships. Everyone we met on the ship was so jealous of our HUGE cabin and the balcony.

We made our first cruise on the Festival in May 1980 when our 26 YO daughter was 6 mos. Left from Miami went to St. Thomas and St. Maartin. When we returned to Miami the Norway (SS France) had just arrived for her maiden run under the NCL banner.

Seems like ages a go! The Festival was a good ship and has kept us cruising since. Sorry to hear she met such a sorry fate!

Cotton,

I think we talked about this on previous threads. We weren't on the same cruise, but close. Hope you are doing okay. My family and I were on the Gulf Coast today checking out our gutted house in the Pass. So much devastation, but we are rebuilding. I hope it comes back again. We miss our time out there. We just booked a cruise on the Elation during Mardi Gras for some needed R & R.

We actually did the Festivale AFTER having gone on the Ecstasy (when she was NEW) and the Holiday.

We felt the opposite. Old, run down and VERY small. Now, we went 1 month prior to the transfer/sale to Premier (??), so that could have been the reason for the condition.

Because the ship was sold, we got a killer deal on a Southern Caribbean cruise, which is why we went. Had a great time, but the fond memories are of the ports of call, not the tugboat itself.

HOWEVER, for a first cruise or one where the ship was new, there must be a lot of fond memories.

It would have made a great casino ship or even a tender for some of the newer mega ships!!

:D Oh, Mel, senility is setting in. Y'know, after I posted that, I had a little feeling of deja vu.....

The Pass and Waveland look the worst to me. Friends on Henderson Point and BIL in Waveland lost their homes.:o Your home there was gutted (so sorry), and I now own nothing in the world except a beachfront lot with a slab on it. All still so very sad. My little FEMA trailer is just fine for the time being. I may never get to rebuild.

Wonderful! Something y'all need, I'm sure. My son sent me to L.A. to visit my daughter in November, and we took a 4-nighter cruise on the Paradise. It helped to get away. Enjoy your cruise!:)
