Regent Explorer helps for searching a person felt off a cruise ship in the Med!

Recommended Posts

I am on the Regent Explorer and we are located between Alicante and Malaga at sea. In the night (about 3.30 am) we got an Info from the captain that a person from an other cruise ship (I think it was the NCL Spirit) fallen off the ship. We (seven other ships and one Helicopter) searching for the person! Our stop today in Alicante was canceld!

Explorer was released by the authorities from the search effort around 10:30am this morning and we are now underway to Barcelona.

Information from Captain Stan’s updates:

  • The “man overboard” incident occurred at around 02:30 this morning (believed to be a passenger from Norwegian Spirit)
  • Explorer joined Norwegian Spirit and other vessels & helicopter in the search & rescue operation (Captain Stan woke passengers & crew at 03:30 with a ship-wide announcement informing of the operation and warning that the ship might make sudden manoeuvres)
  • At daybreak the search & rescue operation continued with the hopes that daylight would increase the chances of finding the person
  • 8 hours after the initial incident, Explorer was released from search & rescue duties. Other vessels, including Norwegian Spirit continued with the search
  • Chances of survival in the water after 6 hours are very slim

Our thoughts are with the missing person and their family. Very sad.

I am on Explorer also. After 3:30 am announcement many passengers stayed on their balconies in the pre dawn morning helping to look . Our ship and the NCL Spirit did grid search of hours. Tough night for our deck crew.

Spanish news report say Spirit passenger was 34, Saudi man, and he jumped intentionally.
