Hello! I could use some advice about travel insurance. My fiancé and I are booked on Harmony of the Seas in November 2018. I went ahead and paid for Royal's travel insurance when we booked because I was under the impression that I could cancel that later if needed. We booked July of last year and now I'm seeing that some insurance policies require reservation within 30 days of booking?

I guess what I want to know is do you use the ships insurance or do you reserve outside insurance? If you don't use the ships insurance, what do you use? Is it too late for us to book?

My fiancé is a high functioning quadriplegic. He doesn't really have any excessive needs other than his wheelchair and his catheter. I'm a nurse and pretty confident that I can take care of any minor issues that arise. We're just looking for peace of mind in case he (or myself) needs emergency medical care or evacuation.

RCCL's insurance does not cover any pre-existing conditions. Therefore it's best to purchase third party insurance. With that said most third party insurance policies must be purchased within 10 - 14 days depending on policy and company of the booking date to have pre-existing conditions waived. ''

The following websites allow you to compare policies

Is it too late depends on whether or not you can cancel RCCL's insurance. If you can and are still within 10-14 days of your booking date than suggest you find a policy that works for you using the website posted above.

Don't fret if past the 10-14 days you still have options.

Nationwide has a couple of cruise polices that will waive pre-existing conditions is the policy is purchased prior to the final payment period. https://travel.nationwide.com/plans/cruise Personally use this program if by chance I have to cancel before the final payment I haven't lost the cost of the insurance because I hadn't purchased it yet. All other companies give you a 10 review period and if you cancel the insurance policy within that period you'll get a refund. After the 10 day review period there's no refund.

Other options are :

  • Generali Global Assistance Premium is 24 hours prior to final payment
  • International Medical Group iTravelInsured LX is 24 hours prior to final payment
  • TravelSafe Classic Plus Policy is 21 days within booking date
  • HTH Worldwide Trip Protector Preferred is 21 days within booking date

Disclaimer - Do not work in the insurance industry and or affiliated with any of these companies. You need to do your own research and determine what best suits your needs.
