Capri and Sorrento in one day

You can physically get to both but you won't have a lot of time at either one. As long as you understand that, if it's still what you want to do, go for it.

Ā

Historically the advice has been to go to Sorrento in the morning because shops close down in the afternoon but each year it seems that more and more stay open all day, so I'm not sure that advice is as pertinent today as in the past. If shopping isn't your primary reason for going to Sorrento it might not matter anyway.

What time is your arrival in Naples?

Okay, so the first ferry you could make to Capri would be the 8:05 AM SNAV, arriving just before 9 AM.

Ā

The first ferry to Sorrento is the 9 AM Alilauro, arriving at 9:45 AM. http://www.alilauro.it/orari-e-tariffe

Ā

By train you could absolutely make the 8:11 express Circumvesuviana (not the Campania Express) arriving to Sorrento at 9:03. You might also be able to catch the 7:39 arriving at 8:47 but I'd seriously question whether those additional 15 minutes in Sorrento is worth the rush to the station or the hassle of 30+ stops along the way.

Ā

So either way works and you're on the ground at 9 AM, it's a choice of transport options at this point.

Ā

For the return there are many ferries to choose from going from Capri back to Naples, there is really only one if you're returning from Sorrento (4:25 PM, arrives 5:10 PM).

Ā

If you choose to go to Capri after Sorrento be sure to purchase your return ferry ticket when you arrive on Capri, to have the greatest choice. On days with more than one cruise ship in port the most popular return ferries will sell out.

Ā

If you go to Sorrento first, purchase your ferry ticket from Sorrento to Capri upon arrival, to save yourself that hassle later (since you'll already be at the port anyway, just get it over with). Note that there is a break in the ferry schedule from Sorrento to Capri at mid-day, you'll want to cross ahead of that.

These are fast ferries that carry passengers only but they are not technically hydrofoils because they do not plane above the water.

Ā

Car ferries use Porta di Massa in Naples, about a third of a mile from the cruise port and Molo Beverello.
