Non Tropicana evening

We are leaving for Cuba in about 2 weeks. Hoping someone can offer a suggestion for the evening that is not the Tropicana. Maybe high end hotel/casinos? I wouldn't mind hearing some local music at a the local plaza. Wonder how easy/safe it is to stroll at night. I speak fluent Spanish. Thanks in advance.

Many of the restaurants have bands/singers (of varying quality). There are several Buena Vista Social Club shows. The nearest may be a short walk from the pier, behind the Saratoga hotel. Or you can look at the monthly listings on http://www.lahabana.com for other styles of music at other venues around town. It is easy and safe to take a taxi to them, and find one to get you back.

We went to La Zorra y El Cuervo and listened to some amazing jazz music. Club opens at 10, but get in line by 9:30 to make sure that you will get a seat. Cost is 10 CUC, which includes 2 cocktails. The club is located about a block from Hotel National. You will need to take a taxi there and back, but you shouldn’t have any issues locating one.
