Amber Cove: Am I Crazy to Rent a Car and Drive Myself?

I see there are a couple of major car rental outlets in Amber Cove. Am I crazy to rent a car and drive myself around for the day? Hubby and I are adventurous travelers, have driven in many parts of the world, and speak a little Spanish, but this will be our first visit to this particular port. Any advice? I've searched and found no advice on this subject. Thanks for any tips / warnings / encouragement.

I would personally not rent a car and drive in the Dominican Republic. We took a tour and people were passing the vehicle on the right and left sides, on blind curves, hills, etc. There are lots of people on scooters weaving in and out of traffic.
